Getting stuck is part of making. It doesn’t mean you’re doing badly, and it certainly doesn’t mean you should give up.

Sometimes another pair of eyes can spot the problem straight away. It might be a pattern instruction that needs explaining, a stitch count that has gone astray or a technique that makes more sense once you’ve seen it done.

Asking for help is often the thing that gets the project moving again.

Unfinished projects usually don’t appear all at once. They build up quietly, one sleeve, one border or one bit of sewing up at a time.

Having a regular finishing habit can really help. It doesn’t need to be a whole day. Even setting aside a little time for sewing up, weaving in ends or adding buttons can move a project from “nearly done” to ready to use.

Running short of yarn part way through a garment is never a happy moment.

For many traditionally constructed jumpers, making the back and one sleeve can give you a useful guide to how your yarn is going. If that has used less than half of your yarn, you should have enough to complete the rest.

It’s one of those checks that can give you a bit more confidence before you get too far into the project.

It’s Monday, which means it’s time for Makers Monday.

Our featured make this week is from Sharon, a sweater is a great alternative to a cardigan with these granny hexagons.

What are you working on this week?

Whether you’ve just cast on, you’re halfway through or you’ve finally finished, we’d love to see it.

And don’t wait until it’s perfect. A work in progress, a first attempt or a project that’s been sitting in the bag for months is just as welcome as a finished one.

Share a photo in the comments and tell us what you’re making. Next Monday we’ll feature one of the projects shared in this week’s comments.

Double Pointed Needles (DPNs) can feel a bit awkward when you first start using them, especially at the cast-on stage.

Casting all your stitches onto one needle first gives you a much steadier start. Once the stitches are on, you can divide them between the other needles and join to work in the round with a bit more control.

It’s a small change, but it can make the beginning of socks, sleeves and small circular projects feel much less fiddly.

For more hints on how to make using Double Pointed Needles easier head over to the blog.
