The Man Behind The Maps!

You may have to wait a while .. he’ll be with you soon. There he is .. can you see him?!

We thought it was about time we should reintroduce the Boss, especially as we’ve had some new followers recently.

Having over 40 years experience in the antique business, firstly dealing at Stately Home antiques fairs, and later in the historic city of Bath, antique maps are Dave’s passion. In some ways you could say it’s an obsession!

Affectionately known as ‘Dave the Map’ to the trade, Dave’s 30 years in Bath were spent firstly at Bartlett Street Antiques Centre, before he opened ‘The Antique Map Shop’ on the world renowned Pulteney Bridge. After more than 20 years running this highly successful business at this location, he felt it was time to downsize to a more manageable space. I mean none of us are getting any younger!

We feel so lucky to have found this upstairs space , where the team are more than happy to help sell Dave’s maps.

The Boss can still be found at a few select Antiques Fairs, in Gloucestershire, where he is only too happy to chat all things map related!

Men at work!

We’re back Great Grooms Antique Centre .

After a short change of scene at the Cotswolds Art & Antiques Fair, our maps are now back in Hungerford.

Many thanks to Ben of ‘Great Grooms’ for helping the boss hang his antique maps back in place, at our upstairs space.

Most maps now at the antiques centre can also be found on the Antique Map Shop’s website.

Getting Organised!

Here are just a few more John Speed maps that have recently been added to our website.

We’re also looking forward to re-stocking our upstairs space Great Grooms Antique Centre later this week.

And - that’s a wrap!

Huge thanks to all who visited our stand at the August Art & Antiques Fair, at Westonbirt School in Tetbury - over the weekend.

The weather was perfect and the fair was buzzing!

We were happy to hear that one of our globes would be adorning the shelves of the beautiful Travellers’ Tales London a bijou book and travel shop.

As always it was great catching up with the other dealers, and sharing the heartwarming sense of community.

Ready and waiting for all you lovely people to come and visit our stand at ‘The Cotswolds Decorative, Antiques & Art Fair’ at Westonbirt School, Tetbury, Glos.

First day tomorrow, Friday 7th August opens at 11am, and runs until Sunday 9th.

Antique maps make unusual and interesting gifts, and decorative works of art to adorn any wall.

Why not pop along to our stand in the orangery, and chat all things map related with the boss!

‘The Cotswolds Decorative Antiques & Art Fair’ is this week, yikes. Better get ourselves organised !!

We hope to bring this John Speed Map of Gloucestershire to the event, which is held at Westonbirt School in Tetbury.

If you check out the next photo 👉, you’ll see that this map shows the village of Westonbirt, even if it is spelt slightly differently.

This genuine antique map was printed c.1676, and is a copperplate engraving on hand made paper, hand coloured. Interesting in that it has two town plans. Top left hand corner shows Gloucester and bottom right hand corner Bristol.

We would love to show you this map in person, at Westonbirt School. The fair is open from Friday 7th to Sunday 9th August.

This very large (800mm x 935mm) and decorative geological map of England and Wales would make an impressive addition to any home.

Compiled by Andrew C. Ramsay and published by Edward Stanford of London c.1859 it is a steel plate engraving on machine made paper. A folding map it is laid onto linen.

William Smith pioneered the first geological map of England and Wales in 1815. Illustrating underground rock formations,William Smith’s map revolutionised the scientific study of Geology.

The Edward Stanford map shown in our images is currently on our website ( link in bio ) , and can be found later this week at our upstairs space .

This photo of the Boss was taken on a recent tour of Dorset, when he visited one of his favourite rare and secondhand bookshops in Bridport. A real Aladdin’s cave of treasures.
