The Arbour Beautiful flowers for all occasions

30/10/2026

I know, I know, I do this all the time! 😂
Every season I seem to announce that these are my favourite flowers, only to change my mind a few months later!
But I have to say, I do love the colour palette nature seems to give us each season, and autumn is no exception.
There’s something rather lovely when the clocks change and the temperature dips, fires are lit and soft lamps are switched on, creating those lovely pools of light. And sitting on the table, a beautiful vase filled with the rich, vibrant colours of autumn.
It brings me so much pleasure to create a beautiful bouquet, knowing that it’s going to find its way into someone’s home and become part of that lovely, cosy autumn feeling.
Perhaps that’s why I can never choose a favourite season. Each one brings something different, and just when I think it can’t get any better, nature proves me wrong again!
And I suspect Elizabeth will be hearing me say exactly the same thing when the first spring flowers arrive!

I think we’re probably all guilty of it!

Although we’re known for our flowers, we’ve always loved having a few other lovely things tucked away in The Arbour.
Beautiful candles, pretty matchboxes, little gifts and things for the home that you might not have realised you needed until you spotted them!
And I have to admit, choosing what to stock is one of the parts of running the shop I particularly enjoy. I always think, would I like this in my own home? Would I be pleased to receive it as a gift? Of course, the trouble is that quite often they do, I’m very guilty of going to a buyers fair and saying “ one for me, one for the shop”😂 Needless to say my poor husband stands their with his eyes raised to heaven,🙄 despairing of the woman he married 😂😂 and the daughter he raised, because, well let’s just say Elizabeth is her mother’s daughter 😂😂😂🤪
So next time you’re passing us on Steep Hill, do pop in for a browse. You might find something you weren’t even looking for.

And tell me, are you a sensible shopper who sticks to the list, or do you get distracted by lovely things like I do?

It’s something we often chat about with our couples.

After all the planning and excitement, it seems a shame for those beautiful flowers to be enjoyed for just one day.
Perhaps your bridesmaids could take their bouquets home, your table arrangements could be given to family and friends, or you might like to keep a few favourite flowers yourself.
We’ve even had couples who want their flowers to be enjoyed by others once the celebrations are over.
Of course, some arrangements are easier to take home than others, so it’s worth thinking about this when you’re planning, and I rather like the thought of someone sitting at their kitchen table the following morning, enjoying a beautiful bunch of flowers and remembering what a lovely day it was.
The wedding may be over, but the flowers can carry on bringing a little joy.

And they’re absolutely right. It is!

But I do sometimes wonder what they’d think if they saw us at the end of a busy day. 😂
There are leaves on the floor, buckets everywhere, water down our aprons and usually a pair of scissors that’s gone missing for the third time.
And then there’s the cleaning, the lifting, the deliveries and the endless sweeping up.
It’s not quite as glamorous as the finished bouquets might suggest!
But there’s something very satisfying about starting with buckets of flowers and ending the day knowing that we’ve created something beautiful for someone.
Even if we do look as though we’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards by the time we go home! 😂

It’s a question worth asking!

You might fall in love with a photograph of a beautiful floral arch or an enormous table arrangement, but what looks wonderful in one venue might not work quite so well in another.
A country house, a church, a barn and a marquee, a hotel, all have their own character, and I think the flowers should work with that rather than compete with it.
We always love seeing photographs of your venue, especially the spaces where you’re planning to have flowers.
Sometimes we’ll suggest something slightly different from what you first imagined, simply because we know it may look even better in the setting you’ve chosen, and that’s part of the fun of planning wedding flowers together.
Bring us your ideas, show us your venue, and we’ll help you find the combination that works beautifully for both.
Planning a wedding in Lincolnshire? We’d love to have a chat.

The clocks have gone back, the evenings are going to be getting darker and there’s no escaping the fact that winter is on its way.
I always find it funny how we’re all so pleased to gain an extra hour, yet somehow manage to fill it almost immediately! There’s always another job to do, something that needs sorting or a list waiting to be tackled.
But perhaps today that extra hour could simply be enjoyed. An extra cup of tea, a leisurely breakfast, a walk in the autumn sunshine or even another hour in bed! After all, not every spare moment needs to be filled with something useful.
Sometimes an hour doing absolutely nothing is an hour very well spent.

Happy Sunday everyone.

We have our lovely regular customers, people visiting Lincoln for the first time and others returning to the city after many years And being right in the middle of Steep Hill, we get to hear all sorts of snippets of conversations as people pass by. There’s plenty of complaining about just how steep Steep Hill actually is! 😂 Then there are the energetic ones running up it, sometimes for charity and sometimes, unbelievably, just for fun!
We often hear people encouraging each other along, or debating whether they’ve nearly reached the top. (They usually haven’t!)
And of course, we have those who pop into the shop for a little browse, although I’m fairly sure some are really just looking for a sneaky breather halfway up! 😂 But that’s absolutely fine with us. We’re always happy to provide a little respite from the climb.
It’s all part of the fun of having a shop on one of Lincoln’s most famous streets, and I wouldn’t swap it for anything.

Happy Saturday everyone! And if you’re tackling Steep Hill today, you know where to stop for a breather that’s if you’re not been blown up ( or down ) the hill😂

For me, one of the loveliest things about flowers is how closely they’re tied to our memories. Someone will come into the shop and mention the roses their grandmother grew, the sweet peas their mum always picked or the scent of lilies that reminds them of home, and suddenly we’re not just talking about flowers. We’re talking about people, gardens and little moments from years ago. For me, mine is lavender coloured Michaelmas daisies as my Mum always had some that would flower in the autumn, which for me meant Christmas was on its way.
I love hearing those stories. Sometimes a particular flower means far more to someone than we could ever imagine. Which is why It’s something we love to include in our work, too. Whether we’re creating farewell flowers for someone much loved or a bridal bouquet for a wedding, it’s always lovely when we can include a favourite flower that holds a special memory.

So here’s my Friday question… is there a flower that reminds you of someone special?

I’d love to hear which one and why.

22/10/2026

Of course it is!

It’s something people occasionally seem a little embarrassed to say when they come into the shop, and I always think there’s absolutely no need.
Whether you’re choosing a few lovely stems, a small bunch or a beautiful big bouquet, you’re just as welcome.
We can help you choose something lovely within whatever you’d like to spend. After all, we’re not here to make people feel they have to spend more than they intended. We’re here to help you find something they’ll be delighted to give, and someone else will be delighted to receive.
So please, never feel awkward about telling us your budget.
