Natural earth tones have long had the power to make a room feel calmer, warmer and more settled, and this Notting Hill apartment shows exactly why. Featured by , the project reflects Brian Woulfe’s approach to creating city interiors that feel restorative as well as elegant, using materiality, tone and bespoke design to turn an apartment into a genuine place of retreat after the pace of the working day.

No Brown in Town?

There may once have been “no brown in town,” but this Notting Hill flat makes a strong case against it. In the living room, a bespoke coffee table brings warmth, depth and character through its beautifully figured wood grain and rich finish, grounding the space in natural earth tones that feel both comforting and quietly refined. It is a reminder that the right materials and palette can soften city living, creating an interior that feels less like a backdrop and more like a place to properly unwind.

Hotel comfort is even better when the room is your own. In this principal suite, the headboard gives the bed a strong architectural setting, while large windows bring daylight and a sense of openness to the room. The room aims to captures the pleasure of a well-designed hotel bedroom without sacrificing the personal details and familiar comforts of home.

A bedroom should offer somewhere to spend time, not only somewhere to sleep. A sitting area gives this principal suite another purpose: a private place to read, enjoy a coffee or take a few moments alone, away from the shared rooms of the house. Thoughtful bedroom planning allows these smaller routines to have a setting of their own, making the suite feel more generous through how it is used, rather than its size alone.

The right antique can be one of the hardest-working pieces in a room. This dresser brings character and useful storage into the same composition, showing how older furniture can meet contemporary needs without losing its identity. Combining antiques with a modern interior requires attention to scale and function as well as appearance. Here, the piece earns its place through both, adding individuality while remaining part of the everyday workings of the home.

A restful bedroom need not be a plain one. In this principal suite, colour, tone and texture work together to create a calming interior with enough depth to remain engaging. Furniture and decorative details contribute to the whole rather than competing for attention, allowing the room to feel personal without becoming busy. This is luxury bedroom design grounded in comfort: a considered environment that feels just as inviting at the end of the day as it looks in daylight.

A wardrobe should do more than hold clothes. Within the principal suite, this walk-through dressing area transforms a transitional space into a private setting for getting ready, with bespoke joinery giving the room both practical purpose and architectural presence. Carefully proportioned cabinetry brings order without making storage feel purely functional. The result adds a sense of grandeur to the suite while remaining closely connected to the daily routines it was designed to support.

The spaces we pass through deserve as much thought as the rooms we stay in. In this south London family home, the entrance hall and staircase frame a guest’s first impression while supporting the changing routines of the household. Leaving for work, returning home and welcoming friends place different demands on the same space. Bespoke interior design responds to those differences, making circulation, comfort and everyday use as important as the view from the front door.

A weekend retreat should offer more than a change of address. Featured in The Gloss, the Old Vicarage provides the setting for Brian Woulfe’s reflections on the importance of having somewhere to step away from everyday demands. For us, designing a retreat means considering how a home encourages a different pace: rooms for gathering, corners for reading and bedrooms that invite a slower morning. These are the experiences that give country house interiors their lasting appeal.

Hospitality does not end when dinner is over. At the Old Vicarage, this guest bedroom pairs bold colour and a richly layered interior with the comfort that makes visitors feel immediately at home. It has the individuality of a boutique hotel, without losing the familiarity of a private residence. From the atmosphere on arrival to the experience of waking the following morning, guest room design is an opportunity to make every part of a stay feel welcoming.
