QUALITY.
The most overused, underdefined word in design — and what it actually means.
CLIQUE DESIGN STUDIO

KEVIN McCLOUD SAID IT OUT LOUD
“There’s a word that’s still missing from planning policy, and that’s the word quality.” He’s right about planning. But it’s also missing from most client design briefs. And that’s a bigger problem.
_Dezeen, October 2026

WHAT QUALITY IS NOT
Not expensive finishes.
Not a high specification.
Not how it looks on day one.
Quality is how the project performs.

Kevin McCloud said it in Dezeen this month: “quality” is the word missing from planning policy. We’d go further. It’s the word missing from most design briefs.

Everyone wants a quality finish. Nobody defines it. So it gets negotiated away — first in procurement, then on site, then in the punch list that never fully closes.

At .designstudio, quality is not a specification. It’s three things:

→ Proportions that feel right even when you can’t explain why
→ Details that hold up to real life, not just photography
→ Decisions made at the right time — not reverse-engineered from the budget

If your brief doesn’t define quality, your contractor will define it for you.
