The Art of the Victorian Gentleman: John Grant’s Equestrian Painting of 1887

British Sporting Art, Hyde Park and the Elegance of Victorian Horsemanship In the fashionable world of late Victorian Britain, riding was more than a sporting pursuit. It was an expression of refinement, social standing and the enduring relationship between horse and rider. Among London's most celebrated equestrian destinations was Hyde Park, where the historic riding route known as Rotten Row attracted fashionable society throughout the nineteenth century....

Charles Bilger Spalding (1810–1871) | A Chestnut Hunter in a Stable, 1843

An intimate portrait from the refined world of early Victorian British sporting art.

Signed and dated 1843, this evocative oil by Charles Bilger Spalding presents a mature chestnut hunter standing quietly within its stable.

There is no spectacle of the hunt here. No rider, hounds or expansive landscape. Instead, Spalding gives the horse the dignity of an individual portrait.

Rich chestnut, russet and mahogany tones describe the animal against the subdued architecture of the stable, while its attentive eye creates a remarkable sense of presence.

Spalding first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1840 and developed a documented career centred upon sporting and country subjects. His work was also associated with the important London sporting publishers S. & J. Fuller, while sporting paintings by the artist are represented in British public collections.

The present work has documented provenance through Mallams, Oxford.

Canvas: 53 cm wide × 41 cm high
Framed: 66.5 cm wide × 54 cm high × 2.5 cm deep

New Arrival | Agnes Augusta Talboys RWA – Persian Cats with Teacups 🐾

Six Persian cats, a wicker basket and an elegant tea service come together in this wonderfully characterful early 20th-century British oil painting by Agnes Augusta Talboys RWA, circa 1910–1920.

Across the rich green-covered table, two grey kittens play within a wicker basket, another turns towards the viewer, and two luminous white Persians investigate a cup and saucer. At the right, a final grey cat peers inquisitively from behind the floral teapot.

Signed “A. Augusta Talboys. R.W.A.” lower left and further signed or inscribed verso. The apparently original unlined canvas also retains a Winsor & Newton, London prepared-canvas stamp.

The painting has documented Clevedon Salerooms, Bristol provenance and is presented in a recently fitted Larson Juhl decorative gilt wood frame.

Framed: 64 × 89.5 × 4 cm
Canvas: 46.5 × 73 cm

The Clues Hidden Behind a British Horse Painting

What can the back of an old painting reveal? Discover the remarkable inscriptions and ownership history behind The Horse, a mid-20th-century British equestrian painting attributed to Lionel Ellis (1903–1988).

01/10/2026

🐎 New to our collection — The Horse, circa 1950–1960 An atmospheric British equestrian oil painting attributed to Lionel Ellis (1903–1988), depicting a mature chestnut or reddish-bay horse standing quietly before the weathered timbers of a traditional stable. The work beautifully combines the heritage of British equestrian painting with a distinctly Modern British approach to colour, form and composition. Of particular interest is the remarkable history preserved on the reverse. A historic stretcher inscription identifies the painting as: “THE HORSE BY LIONEL ELLIS PURCHASED FROM THE ARTIST BY V. H. COOPER 1974.” Further inscriptions record subsequent Cooper and Cowill ownership, continuing the painting’s history into 2012. 🏛️ Privately loaned and exhibited with The Famous Lord Hill Museum, late September–1 October 2026. 🖼️ Oil on canvas 📏 Canvas: 51 × 41 cm 📏 Framed: 64.5 × 54 cm 📜 Extensive inscribed provenance 🌍 Worldwide shipping available Now available from Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD®.
