A roof window is easy to love and awkward to reach, and the clocks going back yesterday has just made that obvious again.

From here on the loft is dark by five, and the one window in the room sits well above head height. Standing on the bed to wrestle with something unsuitable is how most people have been managing it, right through to the day they stop using the room.

Fitting a blind should not involve putting six holes in a window frame you paid a lot of money for.

That is the standard method, though. Brackets screwed into the uPVC, holes that stay there long after the blind has gone, and nothing to be done about them if you change your mind in three years.

A waiting room says a good deal about a business before anybody speaks.

Sun in a patient's eyes, a louvre missing out of a run of twelve, a blind nobody has been able to clean since it went up — people read all of it, and they read it while they are sitting there with nothing else to do.

Nearly every window in Northern Ireland has a radiator under it, and whatever hangs above that radiator gets cooked twice a day.

Through the winter it is hot air rising for hours at a time, every day, against the back of the blind. Real timber dries out and starts to bow. Fabric curls at the bottom bar and never sits straight again.

From the middle of October, every window in the house closes and stays closed until spring.

The garden room is about to drop out of use for six months, and it happens without anyone deciding it.
