A Very Fine and Unusual 17th Century Spanish Walnut Table Of Excellent Colour.

This rare table features a large overhanging planked top, which has acquired a beautiful bronze-like colour and patination, above a three drawer frieze on simple square sectioned legs. Featuring extremely accomplished geometric carving. The wavy apron to the bottom of the frieze, carved with smaller versions of the same motifs as used on the drawer fronts and sides. The table is carved and finished all round.

Pieces of this sort were known as Conventuelle, or console tables. It has aged gracefully and will continue to become more beautiful as it is used further, the scars from everyday use adding further to the glorious patina and colour.

The amount of time and skill involved in producing a cabinet of this complexity would have been considerable. Each individual section had to be carefully designed and proportioned before the numerous pieces of veneer were cut from solid stock, prepared to the correct thickness and meticulously arranged to create the intricate geometric patterns.

The veneers were then applied by hand, before being carefully levelled, scraped and finally polished. This was all in addition to the considerable work involved in constructing the cabinet itself.

From initial design through to the finished piece, this would have been an exceptionally labour-intensive process, quite possibly taking many months. The result is a remarkable piece of cabinetmaking, beautifully balanced in both its detail and proportions.
