Shutters on a sash window? The rail has to land in the right place.

A sash is two sliding halves with a meeting rail across the middle. A shutter made like a normal casement can cut straight across that line and stop the lower sash lifting.

What we usually specify:

👉 Tier-on-tier as the default, so the shutter follows the two halves
👉 The shutter rail lined up with the meeting rail
👉 Full-height with a midrail if you want one set of panels instead of two
👉 Panels that fold back, so you can still reach the catches and open the sash

Shutters take the edge off a cold pane. They do not repair failed cords, rotten timber or single glazing. If the window needs a joiner, that comes first.

47mm, 63mm, 76mm, 89mm or 114mm? 🤔

Louvre size is one of the last choices you make before ordering plantation shutters, and it's one you'll see every day.

Here's the short version:

👉 47mm–63mm suit small, cottage, bathroom and landing windows
👉 63mm–76mm are the all-rounders for most casements and bays
👉 89mm–114mm suit large windows and glazed doors where you want the view

With the louvres closed, every size gives similar privacy. The difference shows when they're open: wider louvres mean fewer blades, more light and more of the view.

One thing people rarely think about is clearance. Wider louvres stick out further when they tilt, so on uPVC windows with chunky handles we measure the reveal before recommending a size.
