What a lovely project to be a part of! Annie's grandpa's chair needed some attention and doesn't it look great after a new traditionally upholstered seat and good oil and clean?
We love a chair with a story and this chair comes with a great one! Annie's grandpa, Bertram Osborn Wymer (1891 - 1959) was a professional artist, trained at The Slade School of Art and was illustrator for several upmarket quality publications for the "nursery" age group, including Tiger Tim Annual, Rainbow and Playbox and others until the early 1930's. He had suffered rheumatic fever as a young boy and was refused entry to the army when he attempted to enlist for WW1, and continued to work freelance at home in his studio in Kew Gardens, London throughout WW2. He sat in this chair at his desk and worked at home throughout my childhood. Although a professional artist he had a great love of archaeology and he led many excavations at Barnfield Pit in Swanscombe, Kent - where in 1956 he discovered prehistoric skull bones, which at the time were the earliest human remains ever found in the UK.
