If you hear screaming coming from Irwell Vale tonight… hopefully it’s just the railway. 👻🚂

The East Lancashire Railway’s Halloween Ghost Trains are running this evening, complete with the wonderfully Rossendale-specific mystery of the Swamp Monster of Irwell Vale.

There are also Wizard Adventures running today for anyone who prefers spells to scares.

We love seeing local attractions making the most of half-term and bringing people into the valley.

Half-term question for the parents… 😅

Which room in your house takes the biggest battering when everyone is home?

Is there one part of the room that suddenly feels noticeably colder at this time of year?

One last weekend before the clocks go back. ⏰

British Summer Time ends this Sunday 25 October, which means the clocks go back an hour and those darker evenings suddenly feel very real.

A useful reminder before then:

🔒 Check windows are locking properly
🚪 Check external doors and locks
💡 Make sure outside lighting is working
🌳 Cut back anything obscuring entrances
🔑 And don’t leave keys visible beside windows or doors

Police advice is clear that good physical security starts with secure doors and windows.

So enjoy the extra hour in bed on Sunday…

…but give the house a quick once-over first. 😉

You’ll often see logos on home-improvement websites… but do you know what they actually mean?

CDM states that all of our engineers hold CERTASS certification.

CERTASS operates a government-authorised Competent Person Scheme for replacement windows and doors.

In straightforward terms, registered installers can certify qualifying work against Building Regulations and register that work appropriately, rather than leaving the homeowner to navigate the process alone.

It’s one of those things that isn't as exciting as choosing your new door colour…

…but becomes rather more important when you need the paperwork for your home.

🚧We’ve got an update on the Bank Street improvement works in Rawtenstall, including a change to the traffic direction and a revised work schedule following feedback from local businesses and residents.

From Monday 26th October, Bank Street will become one-way, with traffic travelling from Newchurch Road towards St Mary’s Way. If you’re coming from Kay Street, you’ll only be able to turn left onto Bank Street.

The good news is that all pavements will remain open until after Christmas, and all businesses on Bank Street will remain open throughout the works, so please keep popping in, shopping locally and supporting the independent businesses.

This week has focused on getting the site and compound ready, surveying and site preparation. From next week, you’ll see a more visible presence on site as work continues on the Newchurch end of Bank Street.

What happens to a uPVC door when its useful life eventually comes to an end?

It doesn’t necessarily have to become waste.

The PVC-U door panels offered by CDM are described as fully recyclable, while the Glass and Glazing Federation says uPVC itself can be recycled and repurposed repeatedly.

It’s probably not the first thing you think about when choosing a new front door.

Style? Definitely.
Security? Of course.
Colour? Absolutely.

What happens to the materials many years later? Probably less often.

But it’s still worth knowing.

Try looking at your own house like you’ve never seen it before.

Could someone climb onto a wheelie bin to reach a window?

Is garden furniture giving easy access to somewhere higher up?

Are any accessible windows regularly left unlocked?

October is National Home Security Month, and police advice makes an interesting point: burglars often look for opportunities rather than elaborate ways to break in.

Windows matter too.
