Meet Rob Waters, Technical Director, and one of the longest-standing members of the TRT Lighting team.

This summer marked Rob’s 14th anniversary with TRT, and in September he’ll celebrate an impressive 19 years with the FW Thorpe Plc Group.

Born in Solihull, Rob’s childhood ambitions were varied, he was torn between becoming a chef or an archaeologist, while History and Engineering were his standout subjects at school.

Outside of work, cricket is a big part of Rob’s life. As well as following the game, he coaches the junior section at his local Cookhill Cricket Club 🏏

Australia takes the top spot for his most memorable holiday, while seafood is firmly off the menu.

And his dream dinner guests?

No celebrities required. Rob would choose his wife and two daughters, somewhere with good food, a great view and, most importantly, no iPads.

His advice to his younger self?

“This too shall pass.”

An exciting opportunity to join our growing Tunnel Lighting team.

As we continue to develop our tunnel lighting offering and support an increasing number of projects, we're looking for an Applications Engineer.

Working across both tunnel and illuminated handrail projects, this is a varied technical role covering lighting design, project drawings, site surveys, commissioning and technical support.

You'll get involved with:
🔸 Lighting design using DIALux, Relux and Relux Tunnel
🔸 AutoCAD project drawings
🔸 Lighting design reports and project proposals
🔸 Site surveys, commissioning and site acceptance testing
🔸 Technical support for customers and our sales team

Previous lighting design and AutoCAD experience would be beneficial, but we're equally interested in someone with the right technical aptitude and ambition to develop. Training and support will be provided where needed.

You'll be joining a specialist team working on some challenging and interesting infrastructure projects, with the backing of TRT Lighting and the wider FW Thorpe Plc Group.

Handrail Lighting: How, Why & When? explores the growing use of integrated handrail lighting and, importantly, the practical considerations behind specifying it successfully.

Designed for engineers, lighting designers, consultants and specifiers, the session covers:

🔸 Defining the lighting task and designing for accessibility
🔸 Optical selection, colour temperature and glare control
🔸 Structural and electrical integration
🔸 Emergency lighting considerations
🔸 Relevant standards and guidance

The session looks beyond the product itself, exploring how well-designed, low-level lighting can support wayfinding and inclusive design while reducing visual clutter and unnecessary light spill.

We're pleased to share that R-Range has achieved a TM66 Circular Economy Assessment Method score of 2.8.

Purpose-built for tunnels, subways and rail underpasses, R-Range was developed to make maintenance easier while reducing the environmental impact of the product throughout its lifecycle.

The TM66 score reflects the design principles behind the luminaire, including:

Would you replace an entire tunnel lighting installation… if you didn't have to?

That was the challenge at Frenchgate Tunnel in Doncaster.

Rather than removing and replacing the existing tunnel luminaires, TRT Lighting worked alongside contractor PDS Infrastructure Systems to deliver a purpose-designed LED retrofit solution that reused the existing WRTL Metis housings while replacing the original HPS and fluorescent lighting technology.

The result?

⚡ Annual energy consumption reduced from 657,769 kWh to 168,086 kWh
💷 Estimated annual energy cost savings of more than £53,800
🌍 Reduced embodied carbon by reusing existing infrastructure
🔧 Improved long-term maintainability through a plug-and-play retrofit with DALI controls

It's a great example of how a well-engineered retrofit can modernise tunnel lighting while reducing cost, disruption and material waste.

🚐 Another busy couple of days for the TRT demo van.

This week, Simon Tibble (Area Sales Manager London & Southeast) arranged two customer visits, welcoming teams from Enerveo, Cable Connections Ltd, and DFL-UK for our Handrail Lighting in Practice CPD, presented by Gordon Macfarlane.

Alongside the CPD, attendees had the opportunity to get hands-on with a selection of our latest products, including:

Meet Elliott Hardcastle, Area Sales Manager for the North, who recently celebrated his first anniversary with TRT Lighting 🎉

Born in Leeds, Elliott grew up dreaming of becoming a fireman and, somewhat controversially in his family, supporting Manchester United.

Outside of work, he plays weekly football with his local Man V Fat team and enjoys travelling whenever he gets the chance. Highlights include a Caribbean honeymoon cruise and a family trip to Disney World and Universal Studios – which, according to Elliott, has pretty much put an end to any chance of having savings!

When it comes to food, he has one firm opinion: pineapple has no place on pizza 🍍🚫

His dream dinner guests? Sir Alex Ferguson and Wayne Rooney to relive Manchester United's glory days, alongside Donald Trump – although Elliott admits that invitation probably wouldn't last very long.

And his advice to his younger self?
"Instead of putting my savings into my first house, I should have put it in Bitcoin and I'd be mortgage free now!"
