At Gateways, the rooms were well proportioned, but everyday life felt divided between them.

The ground floor of this South Warwickshire home had a series of separate rooms arranged around a large entrance hall. Our clients wanted a more connected way of living, with space to cook, eat and spend time together.

A single-storey extension brings those activities into one room and opens directly onto the garden. Changes within the original house help the old and new spaces work together.

The pitched roof takes its cue from the existing building. Glazed gables catch morning and evening light, while full-height glazing and sliding doors connect the family space with the garden. Timber cladding gives the gently curved gable walls a softer edge.

When we look at an extension, we also look at the rooms already there. Sometimes the most useful change is the way they connect.

A closer look at work on site at Bradshaws, a Grade II* listed farmhouse in the South Cotswolds.

We’re working with a returning client on the first phase of improvements to the house and its outbuildings. The farmhouse extension is now nearing completion, with a detached bothy being converted into ancillary accommodation and a lean-to being renovated as a gym and office.

The property already had permission when our clients bought it. Our work has included reviewing the design and developing the details, particularly around the roof and its concealed zinc gutter.

Inside the farmhouse, our revisions allow historic doors, cupboards and the kitchen fireplace to be retained. An adjustment to the opening into the new breakfast room also preserves an existing window jamb. Small decisions like these shape how an older building can accommodate new uses while keeping the features that make it distinctive.

We’ll share more as the work progresses.

Coppers had the views. The original house did little to make use of them.

The 1960s dwelling stood on a sloping site in north Oxfordshire, with far-reaching views across the countryside. Inside, awkward circulation took up much of the first floor, while the rooms missed opportunities to look out.

The replacement home puts those views at the centre of the plan, with full-height openings on both floors. At the entrance, a projecting zinc-clad form sits above the glazing.

Prefabricated structurally insulated panels formed the main structure, with additional insulation and airtight detailing incorporated into the construction.

The owners describe living here better than we could: “Every time we return home it raises our spirits and makes us smile.”

Open the kitchen window at Vyners Cottage and the worktop becomes an outdoor bar.

The folding screen is part of a contemporary extension to a listed Cotswold home. Beneath a mono-pitch copper roof, the new kitchen links the main house to a family room and opens directly onto the courtyard.

It gives the kitchen a useful role on both sides of the window, with a place to sit outside while food is prepared within.

This is a look back at a project from our archive. A later phase added a detached garage and workshop, with ancillary guest accommodation.

An extension should make everyday life easier while giving careful thought to the house already there.

These six HSa projects show how different that response can be.

At Old Manor, a Grade II* listed home, a modest single-storey extension replaced a small kitchen lean-to. Oak, local stone and glazing create space for cooking and living.

At The Martins, traditional village-facing elevations were retained, while a contemporary rear extension brought together Cotswold stone, timber and zinc.

At Oxhill House, reorganising existing rooms and extending to the rear created a more open kitchen and living arrangement for a large family.

At Old Mullions, a Grade II listed home, a contemporary rear extension replaced an unsafe 1970s addition. Generous glazing connects the new rooms to the garden and keeps the original rear wall visible.

At 7 Todenham, traditional materials meet contemporary detailing. Large areas of glazing bring daylight deeper into the rooms and open up views across the garden and fields.

At Low Farm House, a stone garden room with bespoke oak doors and exposed structural elements provides a smaller addition to a traditional farmhouse.

If you are considering extending, start with how you want to use your home. Could the existing rooms work better? Where would more daylight help? How should new space relate to the original building?

At HSa, we consider those questions together, developing extension and alteration designs around the way you live and the character of your home.

From slab to walls at Spire View.

Furber Young started on site in August, carrying out the drainage works and constructing the ground-floor slab. Timber Innovations have now begun installing the ground-floor SIP panels, taking the project into its next stage.

This is the point when a footprint starts to become a series of spaces. As the walls go up, the dimensions on the drawings become something you can stand within, and the positions of windows and doorways begin to make sense on site.

With the safety scaffolding in place, work will move on to the first-floor walls and floor structure, followed by the roof.

These photographs record the change from the slab pour to the latest progress on the ground floor. More to follow as the structure goes up.

Paving laid. Planting next at Millers Cottage.

The new paving is complete, with work continuing on the driveway and preparations for the entrance gates and piers. Topsoil is also in place, ready for Isola Garden Design to begin planting.

These are different parts of the same experience: arriving at the house, moving through the garden and looking out onto it from inside. The paving establishes the surfaces underfoot; the entrance and planting will give the approach its next layer of definition.

There is still work to do before we can share the finished result. For now, these photographs mark the project as it approaches completion, with another visit planned as the remaining work progresses.

Planting to follow: Isola Garden Design
