🔨 Thames Hospice – Full Refurbishment Project
From January until we headed off on holiday in mid-July, I was fortunate enough to be involved in a full refurbishment of all three wings at Thames Hospice.
I was really pleased to be selected to be part of such an important project and, most importantly, one that was for such a worthwhile cause.
My main role was to strip out the en-suites before the refurbishment work could begin. This included removing toilets, basins, showers, assisted hand rails, heated towel rails, mirrors and various other fittings.
The existing tiled walls weren’t suitable for the required infection-control standards, so the rooms were stripped back and the walls were over-boarded with hygienic plastic wall cladding. The remaining walls were painted with Dulux Sterishield, new flooring was installed, and I then returned to refit the bathrooms and all of the fittings.
One of the more time-consuming parts was re-positioning all of the assisted hand rails and other fittings onto the new wall cladding. Every fixing had to be carefully re-measured, marked and drilled into the new walls.
And there were a LOT of them! 😂
📊 The numbers
🔹 3 wings refurbished
🔹 28 en-suites
🔹 3 assisted bathrooms
🔹 31 toilets, basins, showers & heated towel rails
🔹 248 assisted hand rails removed, re-measured & refitted
🔹 2,015 holes individually measured, marked & drilled 😎
Alongside the bathroom work, I also carried out a range of other jobs throughout the refurbishment, including light carpentry, painting, re-sealing and various installations.
I was one of the few people involved from the very beginning right through to completion, so it was incredibly rewarding to see the transformation of the rooms and the project as a whole.
Knowing that the work we were doing would help provide a better environment for the patients, families and staff at the hospice made it feel even more worthwhile.
A big project, plenty of different jobs along the way, and one I’m genuinely proud to have been a part of. ❤️🔨
