The Rug Studio, established by Rachel in 2000 after initially entering the trade in 1994. Rachel having trained as a rug weaver has been restoring rugs for 25 years and actively selling at antique and interior fairs for 23 years. As a single mum to 4 young children her time is split between our Stamford Studio, retail concession at Holt Antique Centre and the London warehouse. Rachel is available

by appointment at our Studio or through a home visit. Restoration is still personally carried out by Rachel and respected trained restorers.

It’s the worst week in town for traffic but luckily my studio is the opposite side of the river to the chaos that is Burghley Horse Trials. The locals avoid town for a week as it fills with traders and horse riders galore. The rug studio remains open for sales, cleaning, restoration and bespoke projects.

Another tired fringe! The hoover has a lot to answer for as seen here as it sucks the fringes in breaking the plaits which are a lovely finishing detail. Don’t fret look at this. The skill of a restorer can bring back to life the beauty of any rug and finish. Here’s one. Other times it’s a silk tassel or a kilim (flat weave edge) just a stunning finishing touch to this late 1980s Turkish rug.

After all the behind the scenes posts the loading of the van helps the rugs find their new home and this is the finished affect. Here a stunning light ivory field rug with random knits in other colours sits beautifying this sitting room bringing out the flashes of emerald green from within the rug and along the side cords. A hard days graft is all part of the rug trade. Loading and unloading the van to show clients the rugs at home in situ. All our rugs unless chosen otherwise as part of our bespoke service, are made from natural fibres. No landfill rugs from us!

When getting the right red matters. Is it to be a flat red or have movement. Is it to be tufted which means a continuous colour or hand knotted which will look darker from one end to the other depending if you are looking into or along the pile. These are ll questions I ask when producing your perfect rug.

Plain weave. Even that’s not so plain! 3 different techniques on how to change colour that each have a dramatic effect as to the edges and designs possible in flat kilims. Designs will be handed to me and concepts but practical applications dictate what’s possible unless (as theirs always an exception to the rule in rugs) it’s an Aubusson in which case a cotton thread will sew the long colour changes together after the weaving. More to come on this.
