The Rug Studio 30 years experience in sales, cleaning, restoration and bespoke design of oriental rugs and carpets

The Rug Studio, established by Rachel in 2000 after initially entering the trade in 1994. Rachel having trained as a rug weaver has been restoring rugs for 25 years and actively selling at antique and interior fairs for 23 years. As a single mum to 4 young children her time is split between our Stamford Studio, retail concession at Holt Antique Centre and the London warehouse. Rachel is available by appointment at our Studio or through a home visit. Restoration is still personally carried out by Rachel and respected trained restorers.

I love this. Bought it at The antique Textile annual fair last Sunday at Chelsea. Where will I find another gem like this. 80-100 years old I love a Tibetan. Colours would benefit from a clean but I was happy!

Refringing a small section. Work can be quick with a good pair of finely nosed pliers, wax and years of experience. This antique Persian afshar had just a few cm missing at one end as the finishing touches were applied.

A snippet of life in 2023. The only things that’s changed is the rug I’m restoring and the stock behind! Here I’m restoring a gorgeous antique little Kazak. I sold one just a couple of years earlier almost identical then the client inherited this one. Who would have thought it!
Restoration comes from within, it’s a passion, that extends from having originally trained as a rug weaver.

And today’s Thracian Sarkoy gem. Lovely and square, excellent condition. Which means more than suitable for a busy house...

I’ve always lived a Sarkoy kilim and the uniqueness in their stylisation of design. Here at the rug studio I now have 2! This is my favourite as the detailing in the field and movement of colour is amazing. Then the fineness of weave just reminds us how quality has changed over the last century

St Martin’s Antique Centre just up from The George is a 6 minute walk from my main studio. As you can see the centre is overflowing with unique handmade cushions, kilim stools, suzani embroideries, kilims, doormats and an easy to be inspired hanging bank to browse through just some of my rugs. The larger and more specialist pieces are held within the studio. Stamford became the main home for the business after relocating just over 7 years ago from Uppingham. I initially settled in St Martins to enable me more time with my 4 young children. Now not quite so young they too can be found here tidying and restocking for me.

Another stunning room created by the rug studio. This Afghan reproduction of a traditional Persian design just lifts and brings this room together as only a rug can. What other single item has such a cozy, personal effect on a room than a good colourful traditional or contemporary rug.
