Perhaps it's obvious but as tutors we strive to meet each and every person at their own level of need and identify the best way to teach them. Some like their hand held every step of the way, some want to be given the basic tools and then find their own way (knowing we are hovering in the background), its our job to figure out who's who!

Behind the Scenes Tuesday!
Looking after all of our equipment in the studio is priority. Taking good care of our four kilns is essential, they are an integral part of our studio and having efficient, safe, working kilns ensures the smooth running of our creative cycle for both bisque and glaze kiln firings. Every time we use a kiln we always do a visual inspection, but we always have the great Northern Kilns to come regularly to service and health check our kilns.
It was great to see Adrian again this week, it feels like he’s part of our Pottery family and his skills and knowledge always reassures us that our kilns are in safe hands.

A week in our studio goes by quickly.
This week it’s been like a week of “Firsts” …
Mondays first job was turning the pots made on the Pottery Introduction Day and get them ready for firing. We had our first visit this year from the lovely Adrian from Northern Kilns, giving our kilns a service and health check, it’s always great to see him and he does such an amazing job. Two of our Members, Janet and Martin, who usually throw on the wheel have challenged themselves to make their first handbuilt coil pot and are making great progress; it’s always good to try new techniques. In Leyla’s Throwing School the students started their first Finishing Set which includes learning how to turn their pots, refine surfaces, making handles and lips etc. Guy, another one of our members finished his first Great Crested Grebe sculpture, it looks fantastic. Rachel, who always likes to challenge herself is making her first pierced landscape pot. Friday we had a great handbuilding workshop making pet bowls. This was the first experience for the students to Handbuilding with clay, learning how to design their bowl, prepare clay slabs, construct their bowl and explore decoration and created their own beautiful unique bowls fit for any special canine friend!
Definitely a week of “Firsts” and a lot to celebrate!

Handbuilding, the thing I love to teach. A great way to start pottery if you are curios, a little nervous and a wonderful way to start working with clay and finding out about its creative potential and yourself.
It’s all about Creativity, Confidence and Connecting.

We're proud of the atmosphere here at The Ceramics Studio, we work hard to create an environment that feels chilled and unchallenging. Pottery should be a joy from the very first time you get your hands dirty!

Behind the Scenes Tuesday!
We had a great group of students in on our Pottery Introduction Day, they made a wonderful collection of pots, bowls and plates.
There is another part to this workshop ….what happens to the pots once they have been made? We dry the bowls and plates out very slowly and turn them upside down to reduce the risk of them warping. The pots thrown on the wheel are left to dry until they are at a “leather hard” state, the ideal clay state to be able to return them to the wheel, turn them upside down and then trim the uneven bottom edge off the pot, leaving a nice smooth base to the pot. The pots are then turned upside down and left to thoroughly dry out before they are put into the kiln for their first “bisque” firing.
Finishing handmade pots is a very important part of making and a great skill to learn and a skill that can turn a pot into a “great” pot!
Just one of the many jobs that go on behind the scenes in our lovely studio.
