THE ARCHITECT’S RETREAT: UTILITY SPACE

Back to the Architect’s Retreat and this time the utility room, where the everyday gets done.

This room had a lot to hide: a large ventilation cylinder at one end and the boiler and services at the other. Tall cupboards conceal both, keeping everything accessible for servicing but completely out of sight.

Built-in laundry bins, a pull-down wall dryer and a ceiling airer keep washing out of the rest of the house. By the door, a peg rail takes coats and bags and the bench doubles as a place to change for a swim.

The room opens straight out to the garden and pool, so it’s the route in and out all summer. Pale blue cabinetry, a gingham floor and a wave print at the window bring the outside in and make it a room you enjoy passing through.

DECOREX 2026: NOTES FROM THE SHOW

A little late posting this, but I wanted to mark it with a few highlights.

This year was more about people than browsing. I caught up with industry friends and suppliers I’ve known for over a decade and finally met my business mentor in person as the business moves into its next phase. Lots of talking, hardly any photos.

Otherwise, lighting and finishes were my focus, sourcing for a current project. Alabaster that glows rather than glares, hand-formed copper, blown glass and aged brass that only gets better with use. These are the details that make a room feel lived in.

Here’s what caught my eye.

DESIGNED FOR MOVEMENT

A home gym deserves just as much design consideration as any other room. After all, it’s a space where we want to feel motivated, focused and able to unwind.

Back at our Architect’s House, purpose-designed oak shelving accommodates weights, kettlebells and smaller equipment, keeping everything organised and accessible.

The natural oak continues through the full-height mirrored wall, with the framing and shelving designed to feel part of the architecture rather than separate gym fittings.

Good design isn’t just about how a space looks, but how it makes you feel and supports what you do there.

Next up, the utility areas, designed to make even the most mundane tasks feel like something you might want to linger over a little longer!

WORKING OUT, WORKED IN

Happy Friday. Ready for a workout?

It’s not just our living and working spaces that need to work hard for us. For this contemporary Architect’s House, our clients wanted separate spaces designed around the way they each train. His focuses on weights and strength training, while hers is a dedicated reformer studio.

In his gym, full-height mirrors deepen the space, framed in oak so they feel part of the architecture of the house. Although each was designed around their individual training preferences, both use either space depending on how they’re training.

More to follow from both his gym and the reformer studio.

DOTS & CHECKS:

Our client loves pattern but wanted it used in a contemporary way, in keeping with her modern architect-designed home.

I’m always drawn to pattern where you don’t quite expect it. Used with restraint, it adds character and interest without dominating a space.

Here, tiny dots run through the bespoke birch ply joinery in the garden office. Just off the vestibule, the chequered bathroom takes pattern in a bolder direction, connected by the same warm palette.

Today has rather fittingly been a pattern lover’s day too, with a visit to The Design Social Pop-Up for plenty of new inspiration.

More rooms to follow.

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS:

A little teaser from our latest Garden Office. Bespoke birch ply joinery on a backdrop of pale sienna and the tiniest Le Corbusier Dots wallpaper by Arte .

More to reveal soon…

Meanwhile it’s been a busy week with the start of our Georgian Villa project in Sevenoaks too. Concept design now underway for a large kitchen, garden room, utility and cinema room.

Not forgetting the little brand elevation going on in the background with new website to be launched soon. It’s been so fun to work on and can’t wait to show you.

THE ARCHITECT’S RETREAT:

Pattern lovers, this one’s for you!

Happy to share our latest work, phase two of a much-loved retreat from busy town life.

From bold prints to quieter details, we mixed scale, texture and colour to create rooms that feel relaxed and full of character. Plenty going on but always with restraint.

Many more rooms to show you but for now, after a busy first week back into the school routine and a London visit inspired by Livingetc tours, I’m ready for a packed few weeks ahead with Focus, Decorex and some new projects starting too.

THE EVOLVED HOME:

At the beginning of the year, I had a plan to complete and enhance a few rooms in our house. Over the long summer, we’ve finally finished!

In the living room, I wanted to tone down the colour and dial up the texture and layered lighting, so it felt like a big warm hug of a room. The sofa’s been replaced with one that should see us comfortably into old age! Old rugs have been dispersed elsewhere in the house and replaced with deep-pile, muted rugs that complement the whitewashed brick.

Like a lot of my clients, we’ve done our house in phases, as time and budget allowed. The stairwell was the last area to tackle, once all the messy work elsewhere was finally finished.

We also completely renovated the utility, which now serves our practical needs much better, with loads more storage. What you don’t see is an electric drying rack tucked around the corner, so no more clothes racks dotted around the house!

I’m still layering in accessories, but it’s almost there!
