Inspired by Wardrobe 44 | Clothing brand and Helen B we’re celebrating the “real life” in our “real life homes”. We’re happy to see AI flagging on posts - it’s demoralising to see “perfect” homes on your feed, when we know as designers that these rooms could never possibly work in a real home where real people live.

Hope you enjoy a dose of our unpolished reality. Although we must admit, we’ll be first in line when that AI measuring robot comes to the market - if you were allowed one AI hack for your home, what would you pick? Do let us know?

There’s a big difference between furniture that “fits” and furniture that works.

Fit is about whether you can physically get a piece of furniture into your room.

Whether it works is about whether it creates the right proportions, circulation, scale and atmosphere once it’s there.

When we’re sourcing furniture for a space we consider:

✨ Scale- does it feel right for the size of the room?
We don’t want to leave awkward slithers of space at either end of furniture and if you go too small, a room can feel oddly empty. Scale considers the whole room and everything that’s going in it, not just the wall it’s sitting against.

✨ Proportion- do its dimensions relate well to the room and everything around it?
This is a subtle style consideration. A sofa might be the correct wdith but be very deep, so the room will feel compressed. A coffee table might technically fit between the sofa and TV but be too small relative to the sofa, making the combination feel disconnected.

✨ What’s not there- negative space gives a space breathing room. We design this in. You need space to walk around naturally, open drawers and pull out dining chairs. You’ll know immediately if you haven’t left enough as it’ll be a daily annoyance.

✨ Visual weight- two sofas can have identical dimensions but they “occupy” the room very differently. A low, slender-legged sofa will feel light and airy while a deep, solid-based sofa will feel chunky and heavier.

Our designer’s test isn’t just “will this fit?”

We think “will this make the room feel balanced, comfortable, and functional?”

You’re on holiday.

Both getting ready at the same time.

You’re brushing your teeth. They’re doing their hair. Both using the mirror.

Nobody’s waiting. Nobody’s being jostled out of the way as toothpaste dribbles down their chin.

Over the week there’s less friction. All very nice.

Then you come home. And suddenly you’re back to sharing one basin and it’s, quite frankly, a bit annoying.

That’s the interesting thing about good design. If we do our job right, you shouldn’t notice the decision, but you will notice the difference it makes.

When we’re designing a bathroom, we’re thinking about the day-to-day frictions that really get on your nerves. We think about flow, space and functionality.

Our whole job is to make life a bit simpler.

So you don’t need a double basin. But if you have space, would we recommend one? Absolutely.

You shouldn’t ever feel ashamed or embarrassed about how your room looks when you ask for our help. All the rooms on our grid once lived a different life- some less glamorous than others.

The point is, we meet you where you’re at. We’re not looking at your piles of ”stuff”, floordrobe or ‘90s paint job. We’ve seen it all before. We’re scoping for potential so we can do our job to help you fall back in love with the room.

This garage in Lingfield was being used as storage space, so we transformed it into a garden annexe with versatile space designed around family life. What was once filled with boxes and bikes is now a home office, guest accommodation, shower room, kitchenette, changing area and family chill-out space, making the most of a relatively compact footprint.

The hallway of this new build had perfectly functional grey carpet and white woodwork. Nothing wrong with it but not particularly inspiring. We added a striped stair runner to bring texture, colour and character to the first thing you see as you enter the home.

A slightly awkward layout and lots of dark furniture made this master bedroom feel dated and dark. We replaced the bed with a stunning upholstered headboard and used a subtle floral wallpaper to create a calm, warm room that feels much more cohesive.

This narrow room which had turned into a thoroughfare, has been transformed into a calm and practical workspace for this family home in Sevenoaks. We created a dedicated work zone, introduced bespoke storage and handy seating area, using colour, lighting and soft furnishings to make the room feel lighter and more inviting.

This space had been somewhat relegated as simply a functional and unloved “walk-through” to reach the conservatory. We turned it into a cosy snug with bespoke shelving and storage to make it feel like its own room again. It’s now a multi-purpose music, games and family room.

Every room starts somewhere.

All the things you’re trying to fix in your home are probably more connected than you think.

It feels overwhelming when you tot up everything you think isn’t working in every room.

But beneath it all there are probably some fundamentals that are easier to adjust to make things feel like they’re working.

The lighting, layout, furniture, colour and finishes all influence one another and when they’re considered together, everything starts to make more sense.

Sometimes we say to clients “tear a page out of a magazine if you see something you love”… And they do!

Here’s some other real-life examples of inspiration clients have brought to us when we’re working on a new room for them:

✨The roses in the garden outside a cottage sitting room
✨A Pinterest image of a funky cloakroom with the note “this but different” as our design direction/brief underneath (we nailed it! Hildenborough cloakroom)
✨An old but beloved Roman blind with little stars, that we repurposed into cushions for a child’s bed so this fabric stayed part of the room, even as the scheme was updated around it
✨A neon name sign to be incorporated into a child’s bedroom
✨A coloured scallop border around a doorway
✨NO colour – a teenage room that was specifically to be all done in calming neutrals
✨Several W&B images on Pinterest – especially our playroom with bespoke, hand painted storage! The ultimate flattery!

You definitely don’t need to have a full picture of the room you’d like to create when you reach out to work with an interior designer. Snippets as small as this are just what we need to get a real steer on what we think you’ll love.

Curtains aren’t just “I like that fabric”, grab a tape measure and check out.

Here’s how our curtain-making differs from going to John Lewis and buying a pair of 135cm x 180cm off-the-shelf curtains.

To us, a new pair of curtains encompasses the curtains themselves, including fabric choice, lining and trims, the pole and then their place in the whole room.

As experts in soft furnishings we think about:

⋆ Where should the pole sit and how far beyond the window should it extend? ⋆ How much fullness does the fabric need to create the right drape? ⋆ Where will the curtains stack when they’re open, and are you sacrificing valuable light or covering architectural details? ⋆ What heading will give the fabric the right fall and finish? ⋆ Is there a radiator to consider and should the curtains be kept clear of it? ⋆ Should they just kiss the floor, break slightly or puddle? ⋆ Does the fabric need interlining for body, blackout, insulation or a more luxurious hang? ⋆ How will the pattern repeat work across the width of the curtains and will it need careful matching?
⋆ How big is the pattern repeat and does it work with the proportions of the window and the room? ⋆ How will that fabric actually behave when it’s made up, hung at full scale and being pulled back and forth?

We don’t expect people who aren’t designers to know about these things, but we think it is important to know that one curtain can differ very much from another. Don’t forget to save this as a reference point if you’re planning a room refresh.

Ever fallen in love with a fabric and had no idea what to do with it?

Usually its our clients who can’t get a sample out of their heads but this time it was our turn. We’ve had this @‌sisterbystudioashby sample on our “to use” list for AGES - I mean look at it 😍. So it couldn’t have been better when a client picked up on it too, and asked about suitability for a new bedroom blind.

It’s inspired by Ghanaian heritage and features traditional Kente motifs with a modern twist. This one’s the Afua fabric in Olive with dusty blue block work against deep olive green stripes.

Then along came this bedroom at one of our ongoing projects. We instantly knew this fabric would make the perfect roman blind - an ideal green colourway to complement the gorgeous garden view from this upstairs window. With the complementary contrasting border, we’re completely in LOVE. And the added bonus: the border meant we could make up the full width of the window without stretching our client’s budget to order more fabric.
