Been holding off your home renovation because you’ve assumed you need to extend?

We’ve become so used to seeing an extension as the obvious step when a home starts to feel too small or cramped.

But bigger doesn’t always mean better.

Sometimes the problem isn’t a lack of space, it’s how the space you have is being used (or not!). Poor storage, lack of natural light, awkward layouts and underutilised rooms or outbuildings can all make it feel like you need to start knocking down walls and pushing out 20m2.

That’s not to say extending is the wrong answer. Sometimes it’s exactly what your home needs.

What we’re hoping to help with this month is uncovering and solving the real problems in your home before you opt for a default extension.

To be the first to see the latest in our Better or Bigger series, head to our profile, tap the bell icon and switch on ‘posts’. You never know, it could save you months of unnecessary building work!

We’re not about following trends here, we’re more about enduring style that you’ll love forever.

True luxury isn’t gold taps or Persian rugs, it’s a shoeless hallway.

A bedroom sanctuary is a non-negotiable at W&B HQ. Starting and ending every day in a haven of tranquillity isn’t just for 5-star resorts, you deserve that elegant, luxury feel in your own master suite.

Not every renovation requires an architect, builder or skip. Working with what you have and reconfiguring it to make the most of the square footage can be as effective, often, as extending.

Every home needs a space where five minutes peace is actually peaceful. A formal sitting room can feel a bit old-fashioned but we think there’s still a call for these calm, gentle rooms to shut the door and regroup.

The feeling of knowing you don’t need to decorate for years? Absolutely priceless.

No more Tetris on Christmas day- imagine having enough space to offer to host everyone (and their plus ones!) for lunch.

Not every space needs an L-shaped sofa but if your living area is designed for hanging out with friends and family, it’s definitely one to consider unless you love your osteopath!

We sourced these beautiful meadow paintings by Jude ~ Oil Painter from @‌benendenartfair for our client’s Kent home. There’s something incredibly chic about supporting local artists and knowing your home’s filled with things made or sourced right on your doorstep.

Kid’s bedroom without the characters? Yes please. And not because we’re killjoys, but because they last longer and grow with them. Kinda chic to not have to redecorate every other year.

Kinda chic is our vibe. If it’s yours too, let’s book some time to talk about your next project. Comment CHIC and we’ll DM you.

Not every 3x3-inch sample yells or grabs your attention. It would’ve been easy for our clients to look past this unassuming woven upholstery fabric from , but it was a case of “trust the vision” with this one.

The beautiful, rounded headboard was making a statement already, so the fabric didn’t need to compete. Its job was to add texture and depth to the space, not to scream “look at me”.

A room like this is a sum of all its parts. The headboard is a piece of the jigsaw that makes the completed room feel calm and serene.

If your bedroom is next on your to-decorate list but you feel overwhelmed by samples and paint charts, we’d be delighted to help. Comment BED and we’ll drop you a link to book a free design appointment.

Sorry, but the era of “paint it, buy a sofa, done” belongs in the ‘90s.

This is why your freshly painted sitting room with new sofas still doesn’t feel “finished”.

Fresh walls ✅
New sofa ✅
A new lampshade ✅
Layers ❌
Texture ❌

We’ve come a long way since the ‘90s. Rooms that feel “done” are the ones that have a bit of soul. Layers Maketh the Room! Layers of materials and textures make a space feel lived-in rather than sterile. Sometimes the unexpected, sometimes the inherited.

We don’t just help people at the start of their redecorations, if you’ve reached the “paint it, buy a sofa” stage but aren’t yet feeling done, we can help you get over the finish line. Book to have an initial chat via our website.

Money can’t buy you happiness, but I don’t remember ever being sad in a brand new sitting room.

This formal sitting room is one part of a whole-house renovation in Kent. We had worked with these lovely clients on their previous period property in Sevenoaks, and they called again when they bought a stunning new-build surrounded by Kent countryside. The brief was simple- inject their personality into their new space. Having worked with them before, we had the head start on their tastes, so we got cracking to create a room that feels cosy and snug.

We chose to add stylish panelling to the walls, layer texture through the soft furnishings, and a bespoke TV unit means it works both as a comfortable family room or the doors can be closed off for more intimate, formal evenings.

Check out the grid to see the rest of this stunning house including the kitchen, dining room, hallway and master bedroom.

Sometimes a special commission comes along that you just wish you’d thought of yourself!
Introducing the “Birthday Chair”.

Our client’s family is half French, and this inherited French antique chair is known as the “Birthday Chair”. Every birthday, children sit on it to open their gifts. What a magical tradition!

So imagine our squeals of delight when we were asked to give it a much-needed facelift. We removed a dated box cushion and reupholstered the seat in Wentworth Juniper by Warner House. Then, as an extra surprise, we added a bespoke embroidered scatter cushion to make present unwrapping even comfier!

Do you have a family birthday tradition, or even a birthday chair? We’d absolutely love to hear about it in the comments.

If a room only looks good when no-one’s in, it’s not designed, it’s staged.

It’s why we get people with stunning rooms contacting us at the end of their tether. They’ve done everything by the book, followed their Pinterest board, chosen calming colours, added artwork, but when they’re relaxing, they still don’t feel completely at ease.

Here’s what we know: a beautiful home and a relaxing home aren’t always the same thing. The rooms you see on our grid, in interiors magazines and on Pinterest have all been staged. The difference with our rooms is we know that when we walk away, the space will work for the real lives of our clients.

If you’re trying to connect the dots of a relaxing space with somewhere that matches your moodboards, comment NEWS and we’ll share our latest newsletter with our insights.
