An exceptional and substantial antique English sterling silver sugar basket, made by the esteemed silversmithing partnership of Peter and Ann Bateman for London, fully hallmarked, dating to circa 1795.

The sugar bowl, with a slender reeded swing handle, is of navette (boat) form and stands on an oval pedestal base, the interior retaining its original fully gilded surface. The decoration is particularly fine with detailed engine turned vermicelli style wriggle work around the body, and further crisp engine turned banding below and to the base, all typical of the Georgian era.

The underside is hallmarked as follows:

Date letter: (u) for 1795
Assay office: London
Maker's mark: PB over AB for Peter and Ann Bateman (also to handle)
Silver grade: Lion passant mark for 925/1000 sterling silver (also to handle)

Also stamped with Monarch's Head indicating duty paid.

An antique late Victorian fully hallmarked sterling silver paper clip in the form of a tennis racket, by Grey & Co., for London, circa 1896.

The novelty tennis racket and ball clip is mounted onto a shield shaped base, hinged at the end of the handle to hold paper firmly.

The handle of the racket is hallmarked as follows:

Date letter: (a) for 1896
Assay office: London (Lion assay mark not found)
Maker's mark: Gy & Co for Grey & Co.
Silver grade: Lion passant mark for 925/1000 sterling silver.

Also stamped with pattern No. 3.

Background:

Grey & Co. was a notable British silversmith firm founded in London by William Grey in 1876, operating under that name from 1886 to 1936. Renowned for fine silver novelties, the company supplied prestigious luxury retailers such as Asprey & Co. in London and P. Orr & Sons abroad.

Each piece is hand painted with a scenic roundel in puce with gilt highlights, surrounded by a delicate floral garland and scattered floral sprigs, in the European style.

The plate retains a previous collector's or auction paper label to the base, No. 51.

An antique Anglo-Indian silver filigree cigarette case, oval hinged form, dating to the late 19th Century, circa 1890-1900.

This elegant cigarette case, is formed of differing thicknesses of fine to super fine silver wire filigree expertly hand crafted into delicate floral designs reminiscent of paisley patterns including 'mango' and 'boteh' forms. Internally, there are a pair of oval loops to each side, for attaching straps to hold the contents in place. The hinge is also formed of coiled silver wire, and the simple ball catch holds the case firmly closed.

A small vacant shield cartouche is applied to each side, typical of Eastern and Indian pieces for the European market.

The case is not hallmarked but tests as silver of at least 800 grade.

An antique hardwood Kris or Keris hilt, originating from Cirebon, Northwest Java, and dating to the 19th Century.

The handle is elaborately carved to represent a stylised Garuda bird like form, representing Vishnu's avatar. The body is carved in high relief with foliate and sinewy forms, leading up to a pointed head and curved beak with beaded detail over the top of the head.

This example stands freely, creating a small sculptural work of art in its own right, displaying a superb dark glossy patina with a smoothness to the more prominent areas of the carved surface.

Background:

TD Rogers' lifelong passion for South East Asian ethnography and weapons culminated in the publication of his book, 'An Annotated Bibliography of Indonesian Filipino and Malay Edged Weapons' in 2015. It is widely celebrated as the definitive reference guide, cataloguing over five centuries of examples and literature from the region's historical weaponry.

The glass vase is hand blown and facet cut to six sides. The flared neck leads to a waisted collar, and then on to an urn form body, also hexagonal cut with elongated raised panels to each side. The urn stands on a flattened knop to a spreading hexagonal circular foot.

The gilt decoration features scrolling foliate designs in high relief to each of the raised elongated panels. The remainder of the surface is finely painted in gold gilt with a stylised vine leaf design.

An antique French faience tin glazed pottery plate dating to the second half of the 17th Century, originating from Nevers in central France.

The plate is decorated in underglaze blue on a pale grey/blue tin glazed earthenware body. The central chinoiserie inspired scene depicts a boy seated under a parasol in a rocky garden, surrounded by a blue floral border.

The underside is decorated with foliate designs, displaying three firing stilt marks around an unglazed raised foot rim. The holes in the foot rim enable to plate to be displayed on a wall if desired.

An antique Chinese green glazed biscuit porcelain tea caddy with carved hardwood lid, probably dating to the 18th Century Qianlong period (1735-1796).

The apple green glazed caddy, of rectangular form, is decorated to each side in low relief with a central shou medallion on a 'Greek key' and fretwork ground. The raised narrow neck, outlined with a band of stylised cloud forms, is surmounted with a carved and pierced domed hardwood cover.

The flat underside is unglazed.

Provenance: UK Art Market, purchased at 'C.Y. Tse Antiques and Collectables' according to the label to the base.

Background:

C.Y. Tse Antiques & Collectibles (also known as 子揚行) is a well established seller in Hong Kong for high-end Chinese art, fine porcelain, textiles, and vintage jewellery. Founded by Joseph C.Y. Tse in the early 1970s, items carrying the gallery's distinctive labels are seen at premium global auction houses.
