Lighting Set Up 💡 Visiting Rooms – How to Make Gravy
Production Designer transformed an indoor playing court into a prison visiting room, while DP set out to create a moody, natural daylight aesthetic—all within the constraints of a modest budget, multiple script pages, and a full 360° shooting environment.
The lighting approach needed to be fast, flexible, and keep the floor as clear as possible. A key part of making that work was rigging Creamsource Vortex8s fitted with DoPchoice SNAPBAGS and SNAPGRIDS high in the roof beams. The SNAPBAGS softened the fixtures into a natural ambient source, while the SNAPGRIDS maintained directional control, creating a consistent daylight base that held up from every camera angle.
Outside the set, a 6K Fresnel and two ARRI M40s pushed sunlight through the windows and shutters to create highlights and texture. Behind camera, large diffusion frames helped shape the ambient rig, while additional Vortex8s were pushed through an egg-crated 8x8 for reverse key. Poly and Lightsocks finished the look with subtle fill and eye light.
A great example of how the right light modifiers don't just soften light—they make a lighting plan faster, cleaner, and more adaptable on set.
