Euro 2800. Mythological, continental school, late 17th / early 18th Century oil on canvas painting - Perseus and Andromeda. Framed measurements are 80 cm high by 100 cm wide. A captivating baroque mythological composition depicting the rescue of Andromeda by the hero Perseus. Andromeda is shown chained to a rocky promontory by the shoreline, her body draped in a luminous sea-green and blue chiton. Her arms raised in terror but she is saved - descending dramatically from a stormy sky, Perseus sweeps downward clad in classical armor with a billowing crimson cloak, brandishing his sword at the open-mouthed sea monster emerging from the crashing waves below. The painting demonstrates a striking mastery of chiaroscuro, utilizing a deep, atmospheric palette contrasted against the highlighted skin tones of the figures to enhance the theatricality and movement of the narrative.
