There’s almost always someone during my sushi workshops who, after making their first sushi roll, looks at me with that classic “Rik... I think I messed this up” face. 😂🍣
And honestly? I love it.
People see those beautiful, perfectly shaped sushi rolls on Instagram and think, “How hard can it be?” Until they’re sitting at my table with a sheet of nori, some sushi rice and a bamboo mat. Then suddenly the rice is everywhere, the filling is escaping from the sides and the nori seems to have developed a mind of its own. 🤣
“Rik... HELP!”
“No worries. Let’s try again.”
That’s exactly why I teach several different types of sushi. Some with a bamboo mat, some without, some with your hands and all with slightly different techniques.
And almost every time, something funny happens.
The second roll is better.
The third is even better.
People start helping each other and before they know it, they’re completely into it. 🍣
Then, a couple of hours later, they look at the huge platter in front of them and say:
“Wait... I made ALL of this?”
Yep. YOU did. 😁🙌
And that’s the moment I love most.
Not the perfect sushi roll.
The moment someone realizes they can actually do it. ❤️🍣
