🌿✨ Following our successful iTeach programme with NUS a few months ago, Singapore Carnivorous Plants (SCP) is grateful to have collaborated with the National University of Singapore (NUS) once again on 8 October 2026 — this time for a Plants & Organisms demonstration and Comparative Botany practical session! 🔬🌱

For this collaboration, SCP worked closely with Dr Amy Choong to plan and develop the programme overview, educational content and practical components, including selecting and preparing live botanical specimens. The session explored carnivorous plants’ fascinating adaptations, trapping mechanisms, nutrient acquisition strategies and ecological relationships.

The session was led and presented by Gabriel, with the support of Aaron, Jessica, Samuel and Matthew, sharing SCP’s specialist knowledge with NUS undergraduates through interactive demonstrations and hands-on learning, including observations using stereozoom microscopes. 🔬

This collaboration was especially meaningful as Samuel is also an NUS alumnus, and we are grateful for the opportunity to contribute our expertise in botanical education and programme development to the university community.

A huge thank you to Dr Amy and NUS for the opportunity and trust! We look forward to more meaningful collaborations! 🌱🎓

🌿✨ Meet Nepenthes veitchii ‘Bario’ — a stunning seed-grown specimen already showing incredible potential at a young age!

Native to the highlands of Borneo, N. veitchii is highly admired for its spectacular flared peristome, beautiful colouration and distinctive hairy pitchers. Our seed-grown Bario specimen is already developing an impressive golden-yellow peristome with striking reddish stripes, complemented by delicate red speckling and a beautifully textured pitcher body! 🏺🌱

As this young plant continues to mature, we look forward to seeing how its peristome, colouration and overall pitcher characteristics develop. One of the most exciting aspects of growing Nepenthes from seed is watching each individual plant express its unique traits over time!

🌿✨ Meet Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) — an extraordinary epiphytic bromeliad admired for its long, silvery cascading strands and beautifully airy appearance!

Native to parts of the Americas, Spanish moss naturally grows draped over tree branches in warm, humid environments. Despite its name, it is not a true moss — it belongs to the bromeliad family and is closely related to air plants. 🌿💨

Rather than growing in soil, Tillandsia usneoides absorbs moisture and nutrients directly from the air through specialised structures on its leaves. Its trailing growth can form impressive curtains over time, making it a striking addition to tropical displays, terrariums and specialist plant collections.

It appreciates bright filtered light, good airflow and regular moisture, especially in warm conditions. With suitable care, it can develop into large, dense hanging masses like the specimens shown here.

🌿✨ Meet Columnea gloriosa — a striking tropical epiphyte admired for its cascading growth, deep velvety foliage and brilliant orange-red tubular flowers!

Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, Columnea gloriosa naturally grows as an epiphyte, often trailing from trees in warm, humid environments. Its dark, softly textured leaves provide a dramatic contrast against its vivid flowers, which give the plant an especially eye-catching appearance when in bloom. 🌺🌿

It appreciates bright filtered light, good humidity and an airy, well-draining growing medium. With suitable conditions, its trailing stems can produce an impressive display of colourful blooms, making it a beautiful companion plant for tropical and specialist plant collections.

Native to Sulawesi, Indonesia, N. hamata is one of the most iconic and highly sought-after Nepenthes species among collectors. Its pitchers develop a striking ribbed peristome lined with prominent fang-like teeth, often accompanied by deep red to dark maroon colouration and fine hairs that give the plant an especially distinctive look. 🏺🌱

As a highland Nepenthes, it appreciates cooler growing conditions—particularly a good temperature drop at night. With suitable humidity, lighting and temperatures, it can produce some of the most impressive pitchers in the genus.
