She woke up early to prove the dough, roll it, stuff it with spicy fish, and bake it golden.🐟🥖

Malu paan soft outside, spicy fish and potato inside. The bakery van can’t compete with this. 😀

🥬 Elawalu Roti — Sri Lanka’s Vegetable Roti

Soft flatbread folded around a spiced vegetable filling potato, carrot, leeks, onion, green chilli, all tossed together and packed inside. Simple, filling, and full of flavour. Bite into a good one and the chilli lets you know it’s there. 🌶️

This is our everyday snack. Tea time, evening hunger, long bus rides elawalu roti shows up for all of it. ☕

You’ll find it in every bakery here, and sometimes the choon paan bike brings it too 🎶 you hear that tune, you run out, and if you’re lucky there’s still roti left in the box.

🐊 Kimbula Banis — the Sri Lankan “Crocodile Bun”

Look at the top of it. That cracked, ridged, sugary crust looks just like crocodile skin — and that’s exactly why we call it Kimbula Banis. “Kimbula” means crocodile in Sinhala. 🐊

Soft on the inside, crunchy and sweet on top. And there’s only one right way to eat it: with a hot cup of tea. ☕ That combo never misses.

You’ll find it in any bakery shop here, but most of us buy it from the choon paan man 🎶 — the bakery bike that rides through the village playing its little tune, loaded with buns and bread. The second kids hear that sound, they come running.

One of our friend got hooked on an HBO series, came away obsessed with Italian food, so we did the only reasonable thing , a full homemade Italian dinner.

Fresh pasta from scratch (Caputo 00, real Parmigiano), carbonara, and a grazing board to start.

She cooked. I watched. And took photos before anyone was allowed to touch it. 📸
