We’ve spent this week walking through a small bathroom, one decision at a time — the floating vanity that opened the floor, the layered light that warmed the room, and now, the last piece: storage planned in from the start instead of squeezed in after the fact.

A recessed niche or an integrated ledge means nothing is ever balanced on the edge of a tub or crowding a windowsill. And here’s a detail people don’t expect — not everything in a small bathroom should be small. A properly scaled storage piece can give a compact room more presence, not less, when it’s placed with intention.

None of this happened by accident. Three decisions, made in the right order, and the room stopped feeling small.

The room isn’t bigger. It just stopped competing with itself.

One of the quickest upgrades to any small bathroom has nothing to do with square footage — it’s the lighting.

Most bathrooms run on a single overhead fixture doing all the work, which tends to read flat and a little cold. We recommend at least three sources: an illuminated mirror at face height, the overhead, and architectural lighting such as LEDs beneath the vanity. Keep everything at 2700K for warmth, and put dimmers on all of it, especially the overhead — the same room should feel different getting ready in the morning than it does winding down at night.

It’s a lighting plan, not a lighting fixture. That’s the whole shift.

Here’s one of our favorite small-bathroom moves, and it’s simpler than most people expect: float the vanity.

Getting the cabinetry off the floor lets you see the flooring running underneath and around it, which immediately makes a small room read as more open — no demolition, no expanded footprint, just a different relationship between the cabinetry and the floor. Add warm LED lighting beneath the vanity and you’ve layered in a second, softer light source at the same time.

It’s a cabinetry decision that does double duty — more visible floor, more layered light.

A small bathroom carries a reputation it hasn’t earned — that it’s stuck being small no matter what you do to it.

It isn’t true. The secret was never downsizing every element to fit the room. It’s creating longer sight lines, reducing visual interruptions, and making every inch work beautifully — a floating vanity instead of one that eats the floor, light coming from more than one source, storage that was planned in from the start instead of added after.

Two people. One room. Neither one compromises.

The primary bathroom at The Residence at Spring Creek Preserve closes out this week's look inside Jason and Kat of Crabtree Design+ Build's newest custom spec home. Finished in the same warm Italian White Oak as the kitchen and bar, it's a room built to feel like a retreat from the very first morning.

Her side holds jewelry trays lined in felt. His side holds a completely different kind of order. Same finish, same hardware, two different ways of living in the same beautiful space.
