Also, wanted to give you a sneak peak at a project I’m working on. I’m doing a sunroom makeover. ***It’s quite possibly the slowest room makeover I’ve ever done. But I’m trying to take my time, be intentional and create a space filled with items I love instead of a space decorated just to be done.
If any of you shopped with me before, you may remember the faux copper table I DIYed that was an anchoring piece in my space. It wasn’t for sale because I knew someday I would create a room around it! That’s what’s happening.
I want to use it as a large dining table when family is in town. To that end, I’ve been gathering old antique wood chairs for seating.
I thought I would share a bit of the restoration process of those chairs. I have collected 8. Set a budget at no more than $10/chair. They had to be structurally sound but I was willing to refinish them if necessary. 5/8 will need refinished to fix their failing finish. But 3 just needed a good cleaning and a little love.
So how do you decide if an item needs restored or refinished? It depends on each chair and your end goal. I don’t want these chairs to look brand new, factory finished. I want them to retain the character that reflects the age of the chair. For me that’s a good candidate for restoration.
These three chairs got a good cleaning scrub with dawn/dawn power wash to remove years of dirt and grime. Then they got a coat of restore a finish followed by Howard’s feed and wax. The result is a beautiful antique chair with patina and character. There are a lot of YouTube tutorials on Restore a finish. But I’m happy to answer any questions you might have.
The other 5 chairs have flaking finishes or a build up of shellac (which is my least favorite finish! More on that later!) so they need stripping and refinishing. Much more labor intensive process….. 😐
