I don’t know who made it. I don’t know why he’s got an arrow in his mouth. I don’t know where he’s headed. What I do know is that this thing has personality for days.

The artist didn’t stop at the portrait—they built the frame too, and it’s every bit as important to the presentation as the artwork itself. Together they create the kind of piece that instantly becomes the topic of conversation.

A true one-of-one oddball in all the right ways.

One of our favorite discoveries in quite some time.

We recently uncovered several paintings by artist Sol Libsohn, and this is the standout of the group. The composition, palette, and sense of movement are exceptional. It’s the kind of painting that keeps revealing itself the longer you live with it.

Most people know Libsohn (1914–2001) as a celebrated documentary photographer and co-founder of New York’s influential Photo League, whose work is held in major museum collections including MoMA and the International Center of Photography.

Oil on canvas, painted in 1971 and further revised by the artist in 1990. Signed and dated lower right.

Framed size: 35 x 43

I genuinely can’t decide if this is a painting or a low-relief sculpture.

The paint is applied so heavily that it becomes part of the composition itself. Hills, sky, building, sun—everything feels carved, built up, and shaped rather than simply painted.

Without question the chunkiest painting we’ve ever handled.

And somehow, despite all that texture, the color is what grabs you first. That electric green field against the warm yellow sky is everything.

If you’ve been around here for a while, you know I have a weakness for whimsical paintings.

This one checked every box the moment I saw it.

A child holding an oversized bird, reduced to simple shapes and bold color, but somehow packed with personality. The painting has a handwritten label on verso — “Child with Bird” 1955.

Ann Truxell (1927–2018) was a Pennsylvania artist known for her modernist paintings, prints, and murals, and this is a wonderful example of her work.

Oil on canvas. 16 1/2 x 22 1/2. Artist framed.

Art dealers spend an embarrassing amount of time thinking about props and styling. For this one, the choice was obvious.

The little bird below the painting is a first grade original by the one and only Aria Gurtman. Unlike the painting, it is not for sale at any price.

If you’ve been following the Judith Levy portfolio, you already know what happens next.

Many of the works have been picked up by serious collectors, and designers from around the country have selected pieces for client projects. The response has been incredible, and for good reason.

This is one of the last Judith Levy paintings we’ll be offering, and it’s a really good one.

Painted circa 1963–64, it has everything that drew us to the collection in the first place: confident brushwork, beautiful color, and that unmistakable sense of movement that makes Levy’s work so compelling.

If you’ve been waiting for the right one, don’t wait too long on this one.

Trying something a little different.

I’m usually behind the camera, moving things around and setting the scene. This vignette looked a little lonely without anybody in it, so I figured I’d step in for once.

The painting behind me is a favorite. A large-scale abstract expressionist oil on canvas from the 1950s–60s with great scale, great presence, and a palette that seems to work with just about everything.

Unsigned.

44 x 48

Also pictured: a set of four early low profile Sculptura chairs. If you’re in the NYC area and interested, send a message and I’ll share details.
