Many years ago an associate overheard my phone conversation with a client over construction and swage blocks and said, “sometimes I’m not even sure you are speaking the English language.” She had a point. This design, known as a bird-back, was sometimes applied to the back of coin silver spoons using a swage block or die with the image starting in the last quarter of the 18th century. The additional design element added a detail that communicated personal fashion and elevated refinement.

This English sterling kettle on stand by Philip Goddard, 1753-1754, is an exuberant masterpiece of Rococo silver. It has everything: flora, fauna, musical instruments, and scrolls. Lots of scrolls. A true silver sculpture.

A little divine intervention never hurts. While researching historical communion practices at First Scots Presbyterian church, I entered into the search engines terms I have used for decades: Presbyterian / tokens / Charleston / silver. First Scots was one of three churches in the world that used silver communion tokens in the beginning of the 19th century. Tokens were issued to qualified communicates to ensure they were prepared to receive the Lord’s Supper. The surviving tokens in museums are dated 1800. What did the church use prior to that? The answer was nestled deep in the pages of the search engine in a reference from 1879: paper. The church was “content with paper” until 1800, when 150 tokens were commissioned from England. If anyone knows where an eighteenth century example of the church’s paper tokens are, please DM.
