happy full moon in Pisces! How has your eclipse season been? 😬

Today is the Sturgeon full moon 🌕 🐟 and it’s an intense one! The sun is in Virgo, so if you’re feeling overwhelmed, I’m sorry, but the only way out is through! You gotta work your way through this one. It’ll take some time to return to a balance, but the good news is that things done during this time have a higher chance of success. You can do it, even if you don’t want to!!

This moon is called the Sturgeon moon because it’s this time of year that they’re easily caught in the Great Lakes! They’re called a living fossil because they’re rather prehistoric looking. There’s 29 species found worldwide, including the one found in Great Lakes.

This moon is also called the Green Corn Moon, the Lightning Moon (I think we know why here in Ohio 😖), and the Grain Moon. 🌙

pls enjoy some gratuitous photos of our newest tonal, Black Beauty!

We realized after we launched Tomato Festival that nothing *quite* fit to really make her shine, and so we started brainstorming a new color… and we made something that pairs beatifically with so many of our heirloom veggies! Plus, for such lovers of purple, we have shockingly few in our line up.

Black Beauty is a common name for different heirloom varieties of vegetables, from eggplants to zucchini to tomatoes, and typically refers to varieties that are a deep saturated, almost black color.

Pretty much any plant that shows up purple, black, blue, or pink is thanks to pigments called anthocyans! Whether it’s berries, carrots, eggplants, tomatoes, black soybeans or black rice, it’s all thanks to anthocyans. The cool thing about this pigment is that it protects the plant from high light or cold stress, and those pigments also decrease your oxidative stress when you consume them, too! AND Anthocyanins are also ph indicators, so in an acidic environment, they show up in the colors we expect, but in more alkaline environments they show up as blue or green.

As far as Black Beauty varieties, sometimes they’re purple, sometimes they’re green, but our shade of Black Beauty is a beautiful blackberry shade. It is a warmer, redder purple. We hope you like it!

This one is specifically fun to me because it’s a result of knowing the nuances of how some of these particular dyes work! The way it breaks yield a really even coverage of speckles. :) I think it’s getting close to my dream of a pottery glaze yarn, but it might take some more playing.

if you got mad at the Ohio State Fair deviled egg flavor, you did exactly what they wanted! ENJOY THE FUN! ENJOY THE NONSENSE! After all, they’re not called angel eggs!!!!

Anyway, only available through August 9th :)

If you saw this elsewhere, I have no idea what you’re talking about, that was definitely not increasingly and ominously more pink, the devil did not touch my eggs.

THE FAIR IS IN TOWN!

Each year, we like to commemorate the Ohio State Fair… in yarn, of course! We pick our fave highlights, but these yarns are as ephemeral as the fair - only here through August 9th!

This year’s offerings include
-THE egg from Ohio Poultry Association: Birthday Cake! Yarn the color of a perfectly cooked hardboiled egg yolk, topped with red and blue sprinkles. 🥚🧶
-This year’s Featured Flavor of pie - Mixed Berry! People from all over the state are competing to see who can make THE BEST pie and we’re jealous of the judges.
-Midway at Midnight - place that exists in our heart (since Midway at the fair closes at 11pm), but those lights against the back drop of the city really drive home some summer nostalgia.
-This year’s cream puff flavor from Schmidt's Sausage Haus! They’re a staple at the Ohio State Fair, and how much more quintessentially American could you get than Root Beer Float? 🍻
-The perennial Butter Cow! We have this color year round, but it’s her time to shine. 🧈🐄🤠

We’ll be taking time to make our way to the fair next Tuesday to taste test the eggs, and view all the hot knits and yarns at Kasich Hall for the Creative Arts division! Hope to see y’all there! 🕺
