August is National Black Business Month, and I’m taking a moment to reflect on this incredible journey.

What started as a passion for creating beautiful, functional spaces has grown into the opportunity to work alongside amazing clients, architects, schools, libraries, healthcare organizations, and community partners across Ohio.

As a Black woman business owner, I’m proud of the relationships we’ve built, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the spaces we’ve helped transform.

Owning a business isn’t always easy, but it’s rewarding to know that our work helps create environments where people learn, heal, collaborate, and thrive.

A PM recently described vendor pricing as “estimates and pricing gymnastics.” That felt accurate.

Vendor pricing can get complicated quickly—especially with loose furnishings and FF&E. One of the simplest ways I help reduce re-pricing and avoid surprises is by starting with thorough field verification.

Before quotes go out, we:

• verify dimensions, clearances, and actual site conditions
• confirm power, data, access, and installation constraints
• document potential issues early
• develop alternates so pricing stays clear and comparable

That upfront work helps PMs, vendors, installers, and owners make better decisions—and keeps the project moving with fewer surprises.

We’re proud of the thoughtful work Ivan brings to Maraye Design Studio—from reviewing completed installations and documenting field conditions to evaluating how spaces function for the people who use them every day.

The punch list is where design intent meets the final details.

Maraye Design Studio recently completed a furniture punch list for an academic office on a college campus, reviewing the installed furnishings for placement, condition, function, and overall readiness.

From conference rooms and private workstations to task seating and support areas, closeout is about making sure the space is not only complete—but ready for the people who will use it every day.

More than 15 years later, this is still one of Lannetta's favorite design concepts.

She recently stopped by to see this Ohio installation, created from authentic license plates and fabricated by a local manufacturer. She developed the concept to celebrate Ohio’s history, identity, and communities.

The most personal detail: She used her grandmother’s license plate to represent Summit County.

Seeing it still look this strong years later is a reminder that thoughtful design should do more than look good. It should tell a story, create connection, and stand the test of time.

A recent trip to North Bass Island gave me the chance to see this special project up close—from the flight in to the finished interiors, outdoor gathering spaces, and waterfront views.

From plans and specifications to spaces ready for students.

Maraye Design Studio is proud to have supported the new West Carrollton 7–12 School through FF&E planning, furniture selections, specifications, coordination, and project closeout.

Every learning space has different needs—from flexible classrooms and collaborative environments to science, career-tech, and wellness spaces. Our role is to help ensure the furniture supports how students learn, how educators teach, and how each room will function every day.
