A study in scale at

George Vanderbilt built Biltmore in the late 1880s as a self-sustaining country retreat, working with architect Richard Morris Hunt and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted to bring together European grandeur and Blue Ridge Mountain surroundings into one considered whole.

That same instinct—different elements, different scales, working in harmony rather than competing—is exactly what we chased in this guest room renovation. A nod to the estate's legacy of layered craftsmanship, updated for storied, but modern, experience.

Here, each individual pattern given its own register so the composition builds rather than competes.

Where the land comes indoors, one quiet corner at at time.

At Oaks & Spokes, Elena Oatman's design draws the Hill Country indoors, opening the room to live oaks and open pasture that shift like a painting by the hour. Beside the window, hand-cut limestone carries the land inside, its weathered face a quiet nod to the ranch's heritage, with felt hats resting against it like the day's last gesture before dusk.

The Eames lounge, in black leather and warm walnut, brings a modern ease to the corner. Everything here feels lived-in: an antler mount, a walking stick leaning where it was last set down, and drafting instruments framed like treasured finds. Pieces gathered over a lifetime and placed with intention, so the room feels collected rather than curated.

Made for a retired couple ready to slow down, this is a room for reading, for rest, and for letting the afternoon unfold.

The places we experience shape the spaces we create.

For ROAM Project Architect Sandra B. Bazurto, a July trip through Colombia offered inspiration at every turn, from Cartagena’s centuries-old architecture to the vivid colors and intricate details of its streets, the lush landscapes of the Valle de Cocora, and Bogotá’s modern lines and shifting light.

In Cartagena, history is built into the landscape. Its iconic stone walls and fortifications took nearly two centuries to complete, standing today as a testament to the city’s colonial past and its role as a major Caribbean port. Within the walled city, colorful balconies, ornate entry details, textured facades, and layers of architectural history create a distinctly Colombian experience.

For our team, travel is about experiencing the layers that make a place feel uniquely itself: its culture, history, landscape, architecture, colors, textures, and everyday details. We bring those observations back with us, allowing the places we visit to inform the spaces we create.

Introducing Oaks & Spokes.

Nestled among the oaks, cedar forests, and rolling hills of Glen Rose, Texas, Oaks & Spokes Ranch was designed as a full-time residence for a retired couple, with a focus on relaxed living, gathering, and a deep connection to its surroundings.

The interiors draw directly from the landscape, pairing warm woods, natural stone, earthy tones, and abundant natural light with sweeping views of the property. Deep greens, golden ochres, and buttery leathers echo the colors of the Hill Country, while layered furnishings, collected objects, contemporary art, and treasured pieces bring a sense of history and personality to the spaces.

It is a place where mornings begin with coffee on the porch overlooking the oaks, afternoons unfold in sunlit rooms filled with art and memory, and evenings draw family and friends together in spaces designed for both intimate comfort and joyful connection, telling stories around the fire.

Swipe to zoom out on this terrace for St. Regis, Mallorca—designed to disappear into its surroundings.

Up close: hand-finished teak, sun-bleached to a warm honey tone that only deepens with age and salt air. Every joint and curve is left exposed rather than hidden—a nod to traditional Mediterranean design, where the wood's grain does the talking.

Pull back, and the furniture starts to recede into the landscape—bird of paradise and canna lilies in citrus reds and greens frame the seating, echoing the same warm tones as the teak so nothing feels imported or staged.

Zoom out completely, and the design logic reveals itself: a woven pergola filters the Mallorcan sun into soft, dappled light, open sightlines pull the eye straight to the coastline, and the furniture is scaled and arranged for long, unhurried lunches.

Every detail, down to the chair joinery, was considered in service of how the space is actually lived in.

At , the Land's End rock formations and the horizon line of the Sea of Cortez are the real protagonists, so we let the palette of this project follow their lead.

Sand, stone, sea glass, driftwood. Nothing in this room fights for attention, and everything in it is in conversation with what's just beyond the curtain.

Look closer, and Baja reveals itself in the details: hand-loomed textures, otomí-inspired embroidery, ceramics shaped by artisans who've been perfecting this craft for generations. It's barefoot luxury in the truest sense: refined, but never precious. Casual, but never careless.

The goal is never to decorate the view. It's to build a space worthy of framing it.
