What makes a solar lighting system “viable”?

In solar lighting, the power plant is contained inside the light...so it better be the best available. The only way to know for sure is compare:

Required lumens
Lumens per watt
Battery watt hours
Output wattage
Burn time (certified by 3rd party lab)

A 90-watt solar panel does not mean a solar light has 90 watts of output.

-Panel watts describe collection capacity.

-Battery watt-hours describe stored energy and determine run time.

-Fixture watts describe OUTPUT and expected lumen output

Three different measurements. Three different jobs. Good solar design connects all three to the required lighting performance.

If they won't provide the specs...there's a reason why. Don't get burned.

Two solar lights can look nearly identical and have completely different capabilities.

Compare:
• Delivered lumens
• Fixture watts
• Lumens per watt
• Battery watt-hours
• Solar panel wattage
• Operating profile
• Autonomy
• Photometrics

“Solar light” is a product category.

It is not a performance specification.

The best solar lighting specification starts with one question:

WHAT DOES THE SITE NEED?

Not:
“What solar light should we buy?”

Start with:
• Required illumination
• Uniformity
• Pole height and spacing
• Distribution
• Operating hours
• Dimming rules
• Autonomy

Then engineer the solar system backward from the lighting requirement.

Copper theft does more than create a repair bill.

It can take lighting offline, consume maintenance resources and leave public spaces dark and dangerous until crews can restore service.

Off-grid solar lighting removes the hidden underground power conductor from the equation.

No underground copper.
No grid dependency.
No utility service required at the pole.

That is resilience you can see every night.

FIELD REALITY:

Every foot of trench avoided can mean less pavement demolition, less restoration, less conduit, less copper, less traffic disruption and less coordination.

For one isolated light, that matters.

Across a mile of trail, roadway or campus, it can completely change the project economics.

The question is not “What does the solar fixture cost?”

The question is “What does the installed lighting system cost?”

08/24/2026

Solar lighting is an energy budget.

COLLECT → STORE → CONSUME

The panel collects energy.
The battery stores it.
The luminaire consumes it.

If the nightly demand exceeds what the system can reliably collect and store, the system eventually has to reduce output, shorten runtime—or go dark.

That is why solar lighting should be engineered as a system, not purchased as a list of component claims.

A battery labeled “78 Ah” tells only part of the story.

To compare stored energy, convert it to watt-hours:

12.8 V × 78 Ah = 998.4 Wh

Compare that with:
12.8 V × 40 Ah = 512 Wh

Same voltage. Nearly half the stored energy.

If a proposed substitute has significantly less energy storage, something else must compensate—or the performance is not equal.

8,550 lumens from 45 watts = 190 lumens per watt.

That number matters.

The more efficiently a luminaire turns electrical energy into usable light, the less energy the battery must supply and the solar panel must replace.

Lumens alone are not enough.
Watts alone are not enough.
Efficiency connects the two.

When evaluating solar lighting, ask to see the math.
