"What am I missing?"
I was having a conversation with another leader just the other week—someone I deeply respect—only to hear them admit that this question is what keeps them up at night. And honestly, it resonated with me so deeply.
The things I know to do, I will do - easy or hard is irrelevant. I have determined to give my absolute best for the glory of God. But what about the things I don't yet know? What about the pieces of the puzzle I haven't even realized I've missed???
Any honest person has to acknowledge that they have gaps in their understanding. So, as leaders, when we come up against our own limitations, what do we do?
Upon reflection, this is my list:
🔸We pray. God promises wisdom to anyone who asks for it. (James 1)
🔸We search the Scriptures. God's Word tells us it holds all things that pertain to life and godliness. Everything we need to live well is in there; it’s just a matter of seeking it out. (2 Peter 1, Proverbs 2)
🔸 We ask questions. Proverbs reminds us that in a multitude of counselors, there is safety. Even Jesus as a young man sat with the elders, both hearing them & asking them questions. We aren't meant to figure it all out in a vacuum. (Proverbs 11, Luke 2)
🔸We hope for grace. We hope that if we do our best to serve with integrity, that when—not if—we miss something or make a mistake, the people we serve will trust our hearts enough to give us grace. This is tough because it requires vulnerability. (I Corinthians 13)
🔸We leave it to God. As my Mom has always said, "You have no one to impress and only one Person to please." (I Peter 5 & Hebrews 12) Even when the people we serve do not understand - leadership does not always feel rewarding. 🤷♀️ Sometimes it's just hard. But if the goal is just do right, then sometimes we have to trust the rest to God. That's all we can do.
So, the original question: what am I missing? To be honest, I don't always know. But my conclusion is that I will try to find out, I will apply myself to wisdom, I will serve with integrity, and I will trust God to cover the rest.
How about you, my friend? If you have anything to add to my brief list, please share!! 👇
