Sometimes a window is more than a view.

This one is up in a tower room at Château de la Treyne. Dark wood, leaded diamond panes, and nothing but Dordogne green on the other side. It looks almost like a painting hung on the wall.

Someone decided this is where the window goes. They were right.

The valance is a large-scale chinoiserie print: cherry blossoms, pagodas, magenta and chartreuse. The chairs are ikat: geometric, multicolor, energetic. They should not work together. But they do, because every color in that ikat fabric exists somewhere in the valance above it.

Every texture in this office was a decision, not an accident. Backlit bookcases, tray ceiling wallpapered overhead, a wall of motorized shades that disappear when you do not need them.

People ask me how to mix antiques into a contemporary home without it looking like a museum. One dark armoire. One vintage mirror. One inherited chair reupholstered in something fresh.

That’s all it takes. You’re not furnishing an entire house from an estate sale. You’re adding time to a room, and time is something new furniture can’t give you.

The rooms that feel timeless almost always have something in them that already is.

Good design should feel effortless to live in, even when it was anything but effortless to create.
