As America turns 250, this charming little pin from the 1940s contains a lot of American history: The “V” stands for Victory—a symbol of hope worn on the American homefront during the Second World War.

The pin’s badge was manufactured by the Green Duck Company of Chicago—which later became famous for buttons like the Eisenhower campaign’s “I Like Ike” pins and even official Beatles fan club buttons. And the mascot, of course, is Mr. Peanut!

Enjoy your day and have a hot dog. But if you’re vegan, have a peanut!

Looking west along the new Lincoln Rd Mall in Miami Beach (1963)

Lincoln Road had recently been redesigned by architect Morris Lapidus into one of the first pedestrian malls in the country. This westward view shows wide walkways, fountains, and stylish storefronts flanked by palm trees. Shoppers strolled, dined, and people-watched in what became known as “The Fifth Avenue of the South.” Lapidus turned a street into a destination an outdoor promenade that blended architecture with atmosphere.
