A ladder in a library isn't really there to reach the top shelf. It's there to remind you the room goes further than what you can see from the floor. We designed this one floor to ceiling so the framed pieces stay low and still, at rest, while the books climb past them into the shadow above the sconces. Architecture is how we see, and a library is the one room where we get to design for curiosity instead of comfort. The ladder is just punctuation... the real idea is that a room can ask you to climb before you have even opened a book.

This was one of those favorite jobs we get to do, the kind where you get to use every tool in the box. When architecture and interiors both belong to you, nothing has to get forced into being a nail just because you're holding a hammer.

I think of powder bathrooms as the jewel boxes of a home. They're mighty in the minuscule: four walls and no one lives in there long enough to get tired of it. That's exactly why it's the one room where I encourage being bold. The wallpaper you'd never commit to in a living room, the marble that's almost too much, a single perfect sconce. Every one of these came from a different house, a different client, but the instinct was the same: give people one small, saturated moment they don't expect. Editing is the key to happiness everywhere else in the house. In the powder bath, I get to break that rule on purpose.

This 1960s Nashville stone house never needed a redesign. It needed permission to be itself again. Under decades of pattern and color, the honey stone walls, the arched windows, the timber beams were all still there, just buried. Editing is the key to happiness, and here that meant taking things away until the house could finally say what it always wanted to say. Rambling, English-inspired, honest.

An interior isn't about furniture. It's about what a family actually does in a room. A branch-form chandelier hangs over a family room built for real use, leather chairs, layered rugs, a coffee table clearly meant to hold feet, not just flowers. Down the hall, an oversized antiqued mirror leans into the dining room like it's been there for decades. Nothing here is precious. It's collected, layered, lived in.

"Much of our task was maintaining the charm, while utilizing all of the interesting spaces that had evolved out of its journey as a house." —Ray Booth

This house had already lived a whole life before we got here. Arched doorways, exposed beams, a floor plan that rambled because it had grown room by room over decades. We didn't erase any of that. We just gave it room to be seen again.

My great love is of good architecture. Without it, you don't have good interiors. I trained as an architect first, so I think of a house as one long decision instead of two separate scopes. The architecture is the vessel, the interiors are what fills it. When those two things get made by different people who never talk to each other, you can feel the seam. On this house, I got to do both, so there isn't one.

We are in Nashville today, at a house I think of as one of the more modern turns my work has taken. This one was a feature in Milieu's Fall issue, and it's also one of the anchor projects in my new book, Evocative Interiors.
