Things I don’t do anymore as an interior designer raising six kids:

1. I don’t worry about small messes made from my kids playing. We can handle messes that can be cleaned up within 15 minutes of focussed tidying.

2. I don’t see someone else’s space and wish mine looked like theirs, our homes are stories curated over many years. I’m proud of what I have created and happy to see others telling their stories.

3. I don’t put out throw pillows on every sofa and bed. This one might bother some people, but when you have six kids, practicality wins. Many throw pillows get crushed and stained when they are left out and they take up precious space. When I need to make a point that I know how to style a space, I pull them out.

3. I don’t start projects I cannot finish in a weekend. I love watching women tackle big DIY projects, but that is not my goal nor season. If I can’t hire it out or do it in a timely manner, I can create beauty in other ways.

By the way, I’m Lucy, an interior designer who styles without losing my soul. If this resonates with you and you are ready to learn practical ways to improve your home without feeling like you are protecting a museum, comment READY and I send you a quick guide to accessing a room in your home. P.S. I normally have my kids clean up our playroom, but I had the time and enjoyed doing it while they were away. I do the major resets of rooms anyway.

Hi, I’m Lucy and my account is for overwhelmed moms who want well-designed & peaceful homes in a realistic timeline.

I’ve written a book—Making Room: How to Create Soul and Style in Your Home and helped clients create homes they love.

So everything I share here comes straight from what’s actually working for me and my clients right now.

If you comment “PEACE,” I’ll send you my book link to help you get started.

Be sure to follow along because there’s absolutely no gatekeeping over here - just simple strategies to help you create a home you and your family love.

Before I was a designer, I was a photographer, and the camera taught me that light is the first thing you decorate with.
Three changes that cost almost nothing:
☀️ Open every curtain and blind first thing. Not halfway, all the way. Morning light is the most beautiful light your home will have all day.
💡 Trade the overhead light for lamps at night. Overhead light flattens a room the way a camera flash flattens a face. Lamps at different heights add warmth and depth. Use warm bulbs (look for 2700K on the box).
🧺 Put a lamp where you work: the kitchen counter, the laundry table, the desk. The places we serve our families deserve beauty too.
You don’t need a new room. You need to see the one you have.
Which room in your house feels darkest right now? Tell me below. I may answer a few in a future video.
If you’ve changed the light and the room still feels off, that’s exactly what we untangle on a Design Clarity Call. Link in bio.

the hard truth I had to face on my home decor journey...

I’m Lucy Jo, an interior designer and mom of six who has created beautiful and functional homes in two moves and with clients, and it all came down to taking time to understand what story a room would tell and which items would do that best.

The Wayfair pieces that hold up to a family of eight — and still look like us.
A house this full asks a lot of its furniture. It has to take muddy shoes and spilled cereal on a Tuesday, then hold a table full of people we love on Sunday. Over the years I’ve learned which pieces can do both, and a surprising number of them came from Wayfair.
The metal beds that have moved and still look brand new, storage cabinet that literally transformed my laundry room, The pantry cabinet that displays the pretty things and all the extras in my kitchen, the buffet that beautifully hides books and toys in my living room the shoe storage that saved me from floor clutter, the marble lamp that I will be able to pass down to the next generation while enjoying now, the nightstands and table lamps that bring me joy as soon as I wake up, the washable rug that hit 5 million views and the king bed that I look forward to getting into everyday.
A beautiful home doesn’t have to wait until the kids are grown. It just has to be chosen with care, one piece at a time.
Way Day runs through October 26, so this is the best weekend of the season to bring one home.

Between the seven of us, there are thirty-four children: thirty-four lunches, thirty-four bedtimes, and more laundry than any of us want to count. These women carry full homes, and most of us had reasons not to step away.

We made the girls trip happen anyway. We laughed until it hurt and danced in every place that would let us (and a few that probably wouldn’t). Then we came home rested, lighter, and more ourselves, with more to give the thirty-four who were waiting.

Making room in a home starts with making room in the woman who keeps it. Joy isn’t a distraction from the calling. Sometimes it’s how God refills the well.

Remember that messes are temporary and evidence of a good life happening. Our breakfast nook gets a lot of traffic and use. I remind myself that within 15 minutes the space can be ready for life again. A stray sock, a few school papers and crumbs should not get in the way of enjoying the space. Never underestimate the impact of a few dedicated minutes to reset. When you wait too long to clean up, creativity can actually be stifled. What room could use a reset in your home? The color rules that actually survive a house of eight.
Most color advice is written for rooms no one lives in. Mine has to hold backpacks at the door, crumbs under the table, and eight people’s worth of stuff every single day. So I stopped choosing color for the showroom and started choosing it for my life.
A forgiving, mid-tone floor. One color that travels from room to room so the house reads as one story. Quiet walls, because the children bring all the color a room needs.
Beauty in a full home isn’t about having less life in it. It’s about giving that life a place to land.

You are not alone and you are likely doing better than you think. Here are three things as a 40 year old mother of six that I suggest for you to feel peaceful in this busy season. ⬇️
1️⃣ Prioritize your mental, physical, spiritual and social health.
Doing more for others while you deteriorate helps no one. Make one (I repeat, one) goal in each category and make it environmentally easy to make it happen daily. For example, for mental health you keep your journal on your pillow to reflect on your day and write down what you are grateful for before you go to bed. Leave your phone elsewhere.
2️⃣ Take time to think about each child or relationship individually.
With six kids’ needs, feeling failure is easy for me. Instead of seeing where I lack, I think about each child and write down what their most pressing need(s) are. Sometimes it is something practical like a doctor appointment, other times it is relational, like spending one-on–one time with them or praising them for something.
3️⃣ Manage your home as carefully as a business manages their storefront or office.
Your home is your workplace/office. How does it look and feel?
Our environments impact us. A messy and chaotic house can lead to a cluttered, anxious mind and idleness. A clean and tidy home leads to peace, productivity and clarity.
Remember this: Keep God, your health, your family and your home at the top of your priorities and everything else will fall into place.
