We are super fans of San Francisco and it’s always had its own design language: a little bit gritty and warm, and deeply human. The Jay feels like a love letter to that spirit.

The building is a John Portman original on the Embarcadero, all raw concrete and angular geometry. ‘Warm brutalism’ became our guiding principle, which allowed us to lean into all of that structural boldness while layering in warmth through woods, bronze details, and a tone-on-tone palette drawn from Ruth Asawa’s sculptures.

The floor-to-ceiling concrete artwork was commissioned from LA artist Guerin, inspired by the circles, triangles, and squares Portman loved. Wall coverings drawn from Ruth Asawa’s notebooks. Conference rooms channeling Peggy Caserta’s Haight-Ashbury boutique. A spiral staircase that’s a bit of a nod to one Portman designed for his own home.

It has gone on to earn Gold Key Awards for Best Upscale Hotel and Best Upscale Lobby, amongst other accolades. One of our favorite San Francisco projects to date!

Athens in the 1960s had a particular kind of magic. The city was opening itself to the world, full of optimism and artistic energy, and the Hilton Athens was right at the center of it all (Jacqueline Kennedy attended the opening party, so you get the vibe).

When the time came to transform it into Conrad Athens The Ilisian, we didn’t want to replicate that era so much as channel its spirit. The goal was continuity of feeling. Preserved mid-century details sit alongside newly commissioned works by historic Athenian atelier Saridis, and the iconic marble facades by artist Yannis Moralis glow in a whole new way after dark, thanks to lighting by Emmy Award-winning designer Eleftheria Deko.

A little fun fact: The Ilisian opened on April 23, 2026, exactly 63 years to the day after the original Hilton Athens welcomed its first guest. We love when things like that happen.

Here’s a quick peek behind the transformation of the Grand Hotel Evropa, an Art Nouveau icon, W Prague :

Stepping deep into landmark territory, we carefully preserved the original interiors where possible: stucco details from 1905, original timber paneling, and sculpted marble fireplaces. We used Art Nouveau as a departure point of course (how could we not), and filled in the gaps with a wee bit of “magical realism,” creating a fantastical garden narrative that winds through both the heritage building and the new contemporary wing.

Named to the Condé Nast Traveller Hot List and called “a swaggering Art Nouveau gem” by Interior Design - it’s getting a brand new life in the heart of Prague.

Thank you SURFACE for sharing our design of this preserved island gem.

Hurricane Irma swept through Little Palm Island a few years back. What came next is one of our favorite examples of what a light renovation can become!

Little Palm Island includes four acres off the Lower Florida Keys, accessible only by boat or seaplane, with a century of history behind it, (including decades as President Truman’s personal fishing retreat). We threaded in British Colonial bones, Truman-era furnishings, and the island’s own flora and fauna through every space: the thatched tiki structures (hinted at here), copper soaking tubs, even the cheeky portrait of Harry and Bess above the Great House fireplace got a nod. It was a fresh take on an important history of both the resort and the regional context.

It has gone on to earn Michelin Three Keys, and T+L Number 1 Resort in Florida two years running, amongst many other lovely accolades. So happy to see this project bloom!

Six Senses London is one of the most complex and rewarding projects we’ve ever delivered; a few notes on why:

Not a refresh, a full reimagining. We designed every touchpoint, from the lobby and restaurants to the spa, pool, members’ club, guest rooms, and suites, all inside the Grade II listed former Whiteley’s department store. The original grand staircase was dismantled into thousands of pieces, extended, and restored by hand over six months. The staircase now rises three floors to meet the building’s original glass dome, which has been fully restored and now anchors the hotel’s Dome Bar. Every decision was made in conversation with the building, and the result feels completely of the moment without ever forgetting its origins.

Shangri-La Kunming just received a whopping 5 nominations in the Sleeper Ahead Awards in the categories for Best: Suite, Lobby, Guestrooms, Bar, and New Build Hotel. We couldn’t be more grateful for the recognition and for the stupendous efforts of our Bangkok team in bringing this project to life. A big congrats to all of the other nominees, and we look forward to seeing you in Singapore in September for the ceremony!
