A home should never be decorated. It should be composed.
After 25 years of designing homes in New York and around the world, I’ve learned that the real value of a designer isn’t found in the pieces we choose. It’s in the thousands of decisions you’ll never have to think about.

It’s the lamp placed exactly where you reach for a book at night. It’s the sofa depth that makes a Sunday afternoon feel endless. It’s the hallway that catches morning light because we moved one wall eight inches.

A seasoned designer brings:

-Vision. We see the finished room before the first sample arrives, so every choice builds toward something whole.
-Access. We have trade relationships, artisans, and one-of-a-kind finds that never reach a showroom floor.
-Protection. We catch the costly mistakes before they happen: the wrong scale, the wrong finish, the order that arrives in twelve weeks instead of four.
-Longevity. We create rooms that age with grace and hold their value, rather than chasing a trend that fades in a season.

The best compliment I ever received wasn’t about a fabric or a finish. A client told me, “I don’t know what you did, but I’m happier coming home.”

That’s the work.

From there, the journey only deepened. My former kitchen was lacquered in Farrow & Ball Pelt, in high gloss, a purple so dark it reads almost black until the light hits it and reveals that rich aubergine soul. Moody, glamorous, and endlessly surprising. I still think about that room.

Purple is the most misunderstood color in design. Pale, it soothes. Deep, it seduces. Either way, it has depth that few colors can match.

A good designer can help you plan and execute the way you would like to live in your home. A good designer will learn as much is possible about their clients, their lifestyle, current and future plans for living in the space. This lower level space has gone from sheetrock walls to an entertainment space that works for the entire family which is inclusive of a billiards room, screening room, gym, playroom, guest room, etc. When working with a designer be clear on your personal needs, use visuals to get your ideas realized and most importantly hire a designer who you’d spend time with. One that you click with. You’ll be spending a lot of time together. The client who we developed this home for has been with us for seventeen years now. They’re no longer clients. They’re family.

When is les’s more? I am in no way a minimalist. But I have learned to feel when less is more and, what creates visual impact in a home. This is a prime example of the power of scale in art. This stillness and saturation of color in this painting by Theo Pinto is the impact in the space. It adds a quiet sense of drama without being overwhelming. Backing this up are the details. Small details that are noticed as the room unfolds. The deep channeling on the banquette. The ribbon and nail detail on the dining chairs. The handmade bronze scones. The artisan vessel which holds the monochromatic florals designed by wonderfully talented folks Passeio All which work together to create visual harmony.

What inspires me?
I am very often asked who and what I am inspired by. The truth is that we are surrounded by inspiration. I have developed a habit of innately scanning wherever I may be. While developing the design aspects of a a home I am subconsciously scouting details wherever I may be. I find this to be especially true when I travel. Several weeks ago I visited Malta and the new Casa Bonavita hotel. I was awestruck from the moment I walked in. Originally a built as an 18th century palazzo. Now refurbished as a seventeen room luxury hotel. The luxury at Casa Bonavita is that you feel as though you are staying a an incredibly chic friend’s home. That friendship extends itself from the decor to everyone you encounter during your stay. We were fortunate to randomly meet the founders of the hotel Suzanne & Christopher Sharp who were as charming and charismatic as Casa Bonavita. During my next visit there I plan on staying in the Folly which is a freestanding building and private compound on the property.

Buy what you like and make it work!
Search for memorable finds when traveling. Those pieces will prompt memories of the journey. When you encounter art that moves you whether it be on the street, a flea market, auction or galley. Buy it will bring joy each time you walk by it. When you see a great chair, lamp, accent table, etc. that moves you but wasn’t exactly what you had envisioned for your home, purchase it. Buy pieces that catch your eye. Pieces that bring joy, invoke memories, bring a smile or a tale about the journey. Buy it and make it work. These are the things that make a house your home.
