Rectangles may be a tile classic, but they’re only the beginning.

Shape can completely change the rhythm of a surface, creating pattern, movement, repetition, and visual interest before color or finish even enters the equation.

From the clean geometry of a hexagon to interlocking Star + Cross patterns and dimensional curves, unconventional formats give designers another way to make the surface itself part of the design.

Sometimes the pattern isn’t printed on the tile. The tile is the pattern.

Swipe through for a closer look at a few shapes that go beyond the rectangle.

A sourcing journey through Italy. 🇮🇹✨

MLW Surfaces President Henry Onians recently traveled to Italy for two of the surface industry’s leading international events.

First stop: in Bologna, where ceramic tile, surface design, and the latest ideas in color, texture, format, and finish take center stage.

Next: in Verona, a global showcase dedicated to natural stone, from raw materials and craftsmanship to technology, design, and finished surfaces.

And of course, the inspiration didn’t stop at the shows. From incredible materials to the architecture and details found throughout Italy, there was inspiration everywhere.

A look at some of the highlights. 🇮🇹
