Most nights this house is just warm white. For the Fourth, we set the front to red, white, and blue — same lights, same system, just a different setting. Got this one done right in time for the country's 250th. The rest of the year it goes back to warm.

This was a team job. The landscape crew handled their side and we took care of the lighting — an FX Luminaire Luxor system, kept warm to match the brick and stone, with different parts of the yard on their own zones and tied into the same system that runs the rest of the house. Good house to work on. Landscape by Gardens; lighting by FX Luminaire, designed in collaboration with Landscape Material & Firewood Sales, Inc. — the same setup that stays warm most nights and can switch to color when they want it.

Outdoor audio done right disappears into the landscape — even coverage, no single loud speaker, controlled from the same system as the rest of the house. The patio, scored.

In a luxury build, every trade works from a plan — the architecture, the lighting, the kitchen, the landscape, each one drawn and coordinated before a wall goes up. The technology that runs the house often has none of that. No plan, no drawings — just a scramble once the walls are closing. So the questions that belong on paper get answered on site, in a rush: where the rack goes, where the network reaches, which walls carry sound and shades. The systems still get installed — they just get installed around a home that was never designed to hold them. Technology deserves what every other trade gets: a real plan, drawn early.

A system sits in a rack somewhere, ten years old, half of it no longer doing what it was built to do. You meant to update it. Life got in the way, a component broke, you worked around it, and now you use a fraction of what you paid for. A party comes up, the system won't cooperate, and it goes back to sitting there.

This is most of the work we get called for. The bones are usually still good — it's the neglect that piled up. The fix is rarely a teardown. We map what's there, keep what's worth keeping, and bring the whole house onto one platform you'll actually use.

An old control system that can't run the TVs anymore. A music system pieced together one component at a time. A network slower than the cell signal in your pocket. If any of that is your house, start with a system evaluation. Link in bio.

In a luxury home, every choice gets real time — the range, the stone, the cabinetry, each one considered and chosen with care. Then the technology, the part of the home you actually touch every day, often gets decided last and fastest. But think about what it really is: the lights that set every evening, the shades that meet the morning, the climate, the music in every room, the security that watches while you sleep. You use the range at dinner. You use this from the moment you wake until the moment you sleep — in every room, every day. It deserves the same consideration as everything else in the home. Not an afterthought.

Planning a remodel? Pre-wire these five things now, even if you skip the gear. Adding the wire later costs ten times more — and sometimes isn't possible. Save this before your next project.

Every smart home lives or dies on its network. Build the home network first, build it right, and everything else — control, audio, cameras, streaming — just works. Skip it and you'll be rebooting things forever. Here's the order we build in.
