A piece of history

“What was that building?”

The Union Hotel was built in 1817 and 1818 by Frederick White, a prominent local figure, just after the War of 1812 had ended. Sackets Harbor was booming at the time. Thousands of soldiers, sailors, merchants, and workers were passing through the village, and a substantial Federal-style stone hotel right in the heart of downtown was exactly what a growing port town needed.

For decades, the Union Hotel was one of the village’s central gathering places. Officers, traders, and travelers coming through one of the most active military and commercial hubs on the Great Lakes all passed through its doors.

By the 1860s it had stopped operating as a hotel, and in the latter part of the 19th century the building became a Masonic Lodge, continuing its role as a central meeting place for the community even as its purpose changed.

By the 20th century its historical importance was formally recognized. New York State acquired and restored the building in 1972, the same year it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It has since served the public as a visitor center and regional discovery center, keeping its doors open to the community it has called home for over 200 years.

The Union Hotel has been standing in Sackets Harbor for over 200 years. It has seen quite a lot.

Here is something we love about this community. When we want to put on great events for the village, the village shows up right back. 🙌😂

Laughs on the Harbor is a two-night comedy fundraiser at the Sackets Harbor Ballroom on October 23 and 24 at 7pm — and every single ticket sold goes directly back into the Chamber so we can keep doing the things that make this village such a special place to live and visit.

4th of July. Sacktoberfest in September. HalloweenVille in October. The events that bring this community together throughout the year. That is what your ticket supports.

And while you are supporting the community, you get to spend an evening at the Ballroom laughing your head off at two genuinely talented comedians. Sky Sands and Mark Chalifoux are both the real deal - nationally performing, crowd-favorite comics who are bringing their shows right here to Sackets Harbor.

Tickets are $30 per person or $120 for a front-row table of four. Doors open at 5:30pm with a cash bar.
