Designs By Siri/My Name Is Siri https://youtu.be/0hz2wtLhLEo At first glance, one would not know that Siri has a disability. She is a well-dressed young woman with a mild disposition.

When you start talking to her, you would realize that her speech is very limited, she becomes very anxious and repeats what you say. Siri, as she is fondly called by her family and friends, was diagnosed with autism when she was three. She went through special education classes and the school system, eventually graduating from Wings Learning Center at the age of 22. There have been several ups and downs during her school life, especially during middle school. Although Siri is intelligent and can read and write at a 3rd grade level, her limited communication skills created frustration and angry outbursts. Physically, Siri is fit and has excellent fine motor skills. She likes to be productive and helpful. She has a lot of patience in completing a task. Her mother knew that Siri was good at arranging and matching things, as she incidentally discovered her talent of making jewelry. Siri quickly mastered many of the fine skills needed to make jewelry. Her work ethic and a desire to impress people, have helped Siri hone her skills. She loves to work (although not every day) and can sit for hours, engaged in it. Jewelry making has had a therapeutic and a calming effect on her and boosted her self-confidence. She is very proud of her work and thrives in the accolades she receives at various events, where she gets to display and sell her jewelry. Siri's family hopes to help develop her skills and expand her work, so that many others with disabilities could be employed by her enterprise. She continues to inspire others with and without disabilities to become productive members of the society. She lives with her parents and 2 brothers in San Francisco Bay Area. While growing up, Siri would always say (verbally) “Only dad no mom” and hearing her say this would make me feel very sad. One of my cousins who had two daughters (typical) would tell me not to worry because that’s how her daughters were too. They enjoyed going alone with their dad, which wouldn’t help me.

One honest confession I have to make is that I would feel very anxious, uncomfortable and worried when ever I was with Siri even at home and I am sure she could sense all of it. All this happened when she was in her teenage, before that time she was happy being with me.

Very humbling to say that Siri and I connected with a shared activity which was making care packages for the army soldiers. After care packages, making jewelry, work outs at the gym, horse riding etc etc and now we do education (going to college). I can confidently say that we have become more like friends. She looks forward to being with me and tells me that she wants to talk (letter board) with me. She usually brings the board to converse, which makes me happy since initiating is difficult for individuals on the spectrum of autism.

Siri is the only person in my life who asks me if I ate, wants to know what I did during the day, tells me to take rest and many more things which makes me realize how much I am loved and cared by my one and only daughter. Happy to say that she gets mad at me, corrects me when she thinks I am wrong, she talks about other people she interacts with and demands that I spend time talking with her. Our relationship has blossomed into something which I never thought it would.

We are getting ready to transition her from a community college to a university next year. As a family we all are super excited that she still is on the Dean’s List for Honors Students.

I am so honored to be called as her mom!

Siri woke up at 6:30 and is now at the gym for her 8am boxing session. If there is nothing on her schedule she cannot get up but if there is something she gets up to go 💪🏽.

It all depends on us and our energy to keep her going.

Happy Birthday to our precious Siri, the miracle in the making.

Some of many memories I hold close to my heart.

- the day she was born
- the day our eyes met for the 1st time
- the day autism was added to her identity
- the day she was awarded a membership in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

Siri has one more class to get her Associate in Science Degree which is so cool to think about.
