When our clients approached us, they had one clear goal: to spend more time fly fishing on their 160 acres of Wyoming riverfront. Every decision followed from there.

Settled low into the landscape, the home is organized along two intersecting hallways, one running north to south and the other east to west. Together, they serve as markers of time and season, framing changing light and creating distinct pathways into the landscape. Reclaimed timber, native stone, and a restrained material palette further connect the architecture to its setting, while generous gathering spaces and sheltered porches make room for life indoors and out.

Some references stay with you throughout your career.

For Todd, one of those is Paul Klee. He first encountered Ancient Sound as a student and has returned to it ever since, drawn to its restraint, playfulness, and ability to express a complex idea with remarkable economy.

That balance continues to shape the way he approaches architecture at Hoedemaker Pfeiffer. Every project begins with a framework, but no two homes should ever arrive at the same answer. Instead, each grows from its place, its people, and the opportunities unique to that site.

Set on a secluded 25-acre island in the Pacific Northwest, The Bluff is the result of an ambitious eight-month transformation. Brought on before the clients had even purchased the property, we reimagined every aspect of the home, from its architectural details and interiors to the furnishings, artwork, and even the table settings, sourcing each element to create a retreat ready for its very first gathering.

The palette draws on earthy tones inspired by the surrounding landscape. Rich textures reflect the coastline. While curated artwork, vintage furnishings, and bespoke details give the home a warmth that feels collected over time. At its center, a reimagined Great Room brings in additional natural light and creates spaces designed for gathering.

For Hillside Sanctuary and Hillside Retreat, the owners came to us hoping to recapture the spirit of a beloved Appalachian stone home that had been lost to fire. Rather than recreate it, we looked to the San Juan Islands and asked how that same sense of permanence and refuge could belong here.

These early sketches explore that idea as it began to take shape. Stone volumes emerge from the hillside, anchored by a central spine of masonry that grounds the home within its landscape. What started as a simple concept became a retreat that feels both deeply personal and inseparable from its setting.

After years of living and traveling around the world, our client wanted to create a lasting home in Tacoma. Reimagining a well-loved apartment, the renovation and interiors balance warmth, craftsmanship, and contemporary living while creating a thoughtful backdrop for an extensive art collection.

White oak millwork, vintage furnishings, and a restrained material palette bring richness and longevity to every room. Mid-century inspired wood screens allow natural light to flow deep into the home, while reconfigured spaces support gathering, entertaining, and quiet retreat.

Throughout, the design celebrates collecting in every sense, from carefully curated artwork to timeless materials and furnishings chosen to be lived with for years to come.

This summer, Steve and Tim travelled to Orcas Island to attend SeaDoc Society annual Wine & Sea Auction, supporting an organization dedicated to protecting the marine ecosystems of the Salish Sea.

For Steve, the evening carried an especially personal significance. Before architecture, he studied biology with an emphasis in marine ecosystem management. Growing up between Seattle and the San Juan Islands, these waters have shaped his perspective for decades.

While his career ultimately led to architecture, that sense of stewardship has never left. Supporting the landscapes and ecosystems that define the Pacific Northwest remains an important part of the practice.

Originally designed by Lionel Pries in 1930, this renovation sought to uncover the qualities that had become obscured over decades of change. The updated design haris.kenjarrity to its plan, strengthens connections between spaces, and creates interiors that feel as rooted in its architectural heritage as they are attuned to contemporary life.

Throughout the home, original character sits comfortably alongside carefully considered interventions, allowing the craftsmanship, materials, and proportions of the original architecture to remain at the forefront.
