TJ's Woodgrain Works Handcrafted Wood/Acrylic Jewelry and Wood Projects T. J.’s Woodgrain Works was founded 11/03/2021 from a life long love of woodworking. Scoggins aka “Popcorn”.

It was 100 years to the day of the birth of the man, the legend himself, my grandfather, J.R. The man who created so many masterpieces out of wood. Many of which can still be found in any one of the family and friends homes, or a multitude of other places that still cherish those masterpieces. Many of the tools used today in our projects were passed down from him. Some of which happen to be very close to the same age as me this year. Some of which he used to build my first desk shortly after I was born. A desk I still own, my son used when he was younger, and one that I will one day pass on to my grandchildren. A desk that has survived two rambunctious and destructive little boys for close to 40 years after being built. So to say we were not founded on quality is an understatement. Is it a coincidence that on the 100th anniversary of his birthday our first birdhouse project began? A bird house that would retrigger the passion of woodworking. A birdhouse that lead to what has formed into what T. J.’s Woodgrain Works is today. Handcrafted masterpieces to be shared with the world. Coincidence! I think not, It was truly meant to be. His legacy will live on from the same tools and skills from all those years ago. So please take some time to admire what has come from the Woodgrain Works Shop and if something catches your eye let us know.

The part I was most concerned with has passed for the most part. Not that things can’t still go terribly wrong, but as long as I don’t decide to make major changes we should be safe.

Not quite sure how the final product will turn out, but so far it’s an interesting piece. But I guess if it wasn’t for experiments we wouldn’t have a lot of things.

Not sure what kind of energy took over today, but the cutoff pile was starting to look like it was forming a small, disgruntled village on the workbench — so a little drilling, some gluing, and a handful of them put together before they could unionize.

I am thinking Christmas‑ornament. Potentially festive. Potentially catastrophic. Time’s gonna decide whether this thing becomes glorious holiday sparkle or detonates into a full‑scale malfunction.

Y’all really thought I hung up my ring‑making hat, didn’t ya?

Bad news for the doubters: I did not. I burned through my pen kits for orders, and while waiting on new kits to arrive I got that itch to make something, and one lonely little acrylic blank on the shelf practically yelled my name.

And since it’s spooky season, of course I grabbed the final piece of “Halloween” acrylic. Last piece. Last holiday of the month. One ring. That’s it.

Just in case yesterday’s little video tease didn’t spell it out, hopefully this one absolutely does.

The barber‑shop swirl comes in swinging: red, white, and blue twisting in that glossy candy‑shell shine that looks like it’s still in motion. The chrome hardware keeps the whole thing razor‑clean — crisp lines, tight snap, that straight‑edge confidence when you pick it up.

Gunmetal Twist Pen — Psychedelic Ripple Lava Explosion

This one’s built for the folks who like their everyday carry to look a little unhinged.

The psychedelic ripple lava explosion acrylic blank throws color like a cosmic tantrum — blues, purples, blacks, molten streaks, all swirling in that liquid‑motion pattern that shifts every time you rotate it. It’s glossy, loud, and absolutely refuses to behave.

October is a busy month — holidays, projects, and the usual shop chaos — but it also carries a quieter note, a softer edge, and yes, a little more pink woven into the days.

To honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the shop carved out a small moment of reflection: a handmade plaque with the ribbon and the word we all reach for when life gets heavy — HOPE.

It’s not a product drop. It’s not a promo. It’s simply a reminder from a tiny Texas workshop that we see the fighters, we celebrate the survivors, and we hold close the ones we’ve lost. Every turner, maker, and tinkerer knows that strength is built layer by layer — and community is, too.

The rain rolled in, humidity shot straight into the stratosphere, and the lead shop gremlin took one look at the moisture level and declared today a cut‑and‑drill‑only day. No glue‑ups. No risking a weak bond. No future pen deciding to eject itself mid‑twist like a tiny acrylic missile.

Now normally this is where I’d drop a few teaser photos of what’s coming…but yesterday’s post already spoiled the vibe, so today I’m restoring the mystery by showing absolutely none of the blanks that got cut and drilled.

Instead, please accept this offering:
an acrylic King Ranch F‑150 cup holder and center cubby cover. Better photos soon.

New pens will appear eventually — just as soon as the weather decides to stop acting like a sponge and let the glue-ups happen under proper, drama‑free conditions.

There’s an entire box of fresh pen blanks inbound to the shop — enough to keep the lathe fed and the pens rolling out in a steady, satisfying parade.

I was going to keep all the new wood and acrylic under wraps, because you gotta maintain at least a little mystery in this operation.

But then… someone didn’t swing by the shop before the real job.
Then that same someone worked later than usual at the real job.
Then that same someone didn’t go to the shop after the real job.

Lazy much? Maybe.

Posts must flow, even when the lead shop gremlin fails his daily commute.

I also think no matter how many before pictures I take of these blanks there’s still enough mystery to the colors and wood grains to show itself as they are cut down to size.
