Every home could use a secret passageway.

We had a fantastic time working with on the millwork for this home office, creating a custom wood panel to conceal a functional—and frankly delightful—entry to an otherwise rudimentary storage space.

The best interiors are shaped by the decisions you might not consciously notice.

The way light moves through a room. The relationship between materials. The balance of proportion, texture, and scale.

Each decision builds on the next, creating a space that feels carefully considered...without feeling overly designed. The goal is to create a home that feels natural, comfortable, and entirely its own.

When everything is working together, you don’t necessarily see the design...you experience it.

And you feel the difference.

One of our favorite parts of this project was introducing more playful elements in an otherwise formal sitting room. The classic Eames Lounge Chair and sophisticated Mayor Sofa juxtaposed with the Knot floor poufs allow a comfy seat for all members of the family.

Quiet color palettes can have so much complexity. Subtle details are our favorites—we love when you are rewarded for looking more closely at upholstery or the grain of a cabinet, and how they can appear to be in conversation with one another.

Welcome to the home of Studio Ballou.

We've been waiting years to make this leap, and we're thrilled we've finally done it. Studio Ballou now has a physical home in the heart of Georgetown.

We're surrounded by other creatives in such a beautiful part of DC, inspired by the space we now have to dream up designs with intention and elegance. Every time we walk over our new threshold, we feel the sense of calm, warmth, and clarity we aim to evoke in our clients' spaces. It's our pleasure to invite clients into our studio to review material samples, plans, and, together, imagine the possibilities for their home.

Keep an eye out next time you're taking a stroll down Wisconsin Avenue—see whether you can spot our new home.

With children back at school, parents have a bit more time for themselves. Having the space to pause and and focus on yourself in a way that is centering and rejuvinating can change everything—for the better.

Our perspective is a bit different lately...a little clearer, a little more nuanced, a litte more beautiful.

Stay tuned.

Long before I started designing interiors, I studied art.

From my earliest design studies, I was taught to think critically about composition, color, balance, and intention—lessons that continue to shape my work today.

What makes a painting successful isn't any single element. It's the relationship between them.

The same is true of an interior. When I design a room, I approach it as a composition. Why does one piece feel right next to another? Why does a space need more height, a change in scale, or a contrasting texture? How does color affect the mood of a space?

A room comes alive when those relationships feel intentional.

Art taught me that designing a memorable space is about more than arranging beautiful objects. It's about creating a composition that feels complete.
