Today I cut the last of the dahlias and worked to clear the dahlia field. Dahlias are called the “diva” of the garden and the title is well-deserved! Plant a tuber, pinch to encourage lateral branching, remove lower leaves to increase air circulation, pinch smaller side buds to create a large, high quality bloom, water heavily, fertilize every 3-4 weeks, label each plant with it’s name, cut down the stalk, dig out the tuber clump, hose dirt off the clump, let dry for 2 days, cut clump apart to make next year tubers, pack and store at 40-50 degrees all winter until you can plant them again in May. So very labor-intensive, but so very beautiful, a real diva🌸🐝
