A collection of exquisite patterns, colours and forms speaking to eachother small curation found within our current exhibition, Earth & Ore - coming to a close, at 5pm this Saturday.

An ancient terracotta Dakari Memorial sculpture from Nigeria.
A Mboum Ceremonial Sceptre currency from Cameroon.
A Kuba Ceremonial Dagger Currency from the DRC.
And an ancient bronze Dogon sculpture from Mali.

How incredibly honoured we are to be the current custodians of these sacred objects and works of unimaginable craftsmanship. We come from a special continent - bustling with creativity and the most magical natural materials to inspire us to create objects that may live on longer than we do.

Currently feautured in our Earth & Ore exhibition - this is the last week to come and witness this extraordinary collection of both contemporary and ancient objects from around the continent.

A beautifully warm and earthy corner curation currently on our Earth & Ore exhibition, up until the 15th of August.

Featuring two handwoven cotton, mohair and found metal (rusted rebar and nails) works by Tali Lehr-Sacks; a pair of sagger-fired stoneware vessels with found metals and wire, by Kim Sacks, made in 1991; and an eco-printed (eucalyptus, casuarina & iron), reconstructed linen and cotton hanging textile, hand-stitched with raffia and h**p thread, by Jane Solomon.

These works by three different artists speak harmoniously to the vast array of techniques to explore using materials from the natural world - clay and minerals excavated from the ground, or growing from it. The endless gifts that nature gives us is undeniable.

A collection of three forged iron currencies - a Ga'anda currency blade from Nigeria/Cameroon, a Kuba fishing spear from the Congo, and a Pende spear currency from the DRC.
Alongside an ancient clay Dakari Grave Sculpture from North-Western Nigeria, and a found metal grid, woven with cotton by Tali Lehr-Sacks.

Luc approaches painting as an alchemist, gathering and grinding stone into pigment, mixing earth, sand, and charcoal into his own elemental language. His studio practice is deeply tied to the land; each painting begins with raw material gathered from the Southern Peninsula of Cape Town, Karoo clay gifted by a friend, or beach sand from his local Noordhoek. These ancient substances hold memory; their presence is not incidental but integral. The act of grinding, binding, and layering is as much about transformation as it is about mark-making; each canvas becomes a kind of ritual, a way of listening to what the earth and his instinct has to say.

His work carries the weight of these materials. The colour palette is unmistakably earthen— shades of umber, ochre, and bone-white, punctuated by deep charcoals and the occasional warmth of rusted iron. These hues emerge not from tubes of paint but from the ground itself, embodying a sense of place and deep time. In his process he sands, scrapes, and builds texture, allowing the paint to crack and settle like parched soil. The paintings feel sculptural, their surfaces marked by organic erosion and deliberate excavation.
The paintings become more than objects—they are artefacts of a lived and deeply felt experience, invitations to step into a world both ancient and immediate.

A sneak peak into our current Earth & Ore exhibition - closing at 5pm on Saturday the 15th of August.

Earth & Ore asks us to kneel to the ground. To consider the act of digging and unearthing — physically and metaphorically. It speaks to extracting minerals and materials from the ground, but also to revealing what lies beneath the surface: hidden histories, buried narratives, and the layered memory of land and labour.

Spanning time and space, the work on this exhibition involves a range of talented South African Contemporary artists, curated alongside ancient Artefacts collected over the past 40 years by Kim Sacks, from all around the African continent.

"For me, there is a fascinating and profound connection between the raw clay which has been excavated from the earth, and the finished product. By taking materials from the earth, one feels a kind of custodianship, almost a need to say thank you. This creates a certain empathy between us and the earth. It is a privilege to use my hands and to be able to shape this clay, which has been dug up from the earth, and create a vessel. All of this eventually results in the magical connection between the raw clay, my fired vessel and the viewer, who experiences the revealed creation which was initially hidden in the earth.
For this specific exhibition - Earth & Ore - my handmade vessels are created using black clay, to which small quantities of sea sand (sourced from Strandbaai in the Western Cape) have been added to create rough and uneven surfaces. I use hand-building techniques of pinching, coiling and slab-building to create these vessels. White Porcelain and Terracotta coloured slip are then added to the surfaces and sgraffito mark-making is used to mimic the natural weathering of ancient rock formations. Afterwards, the pots are fired to earthenware temperatures. I enjoy being part of this artistic process - it creates a deep sense of fulfillment within me."

EARTH & ORE ARTIST HIGHLIGHT: LEDELLE MOE

“In my sculptural practice, I have found myself increasingly drawn to the materiality of earth—gathering soil from various locations, embedding it into my work, and using it as a foundation for contemplation on impermanence, and loss.

This autobiographical engagement with ground and soil has culminated in Findings, a collection of small figurative forms created with soil and cement. At the core of these works are reflections on place. Over the past years I have travelled to various countries including Senegal, Botswana, Martinique, Madagascar, Kenya, South Africa and Japan. In each location I gathered sand and dirt and embedded this sampling of earth into cement carvings of small birds and figures. In digging into the soil and quite literally using it as raw material in making my cement forms I was able to reflect on landscape as ground, land, soil, and earth, and to literally draw from it.

They are placeholders that, for me, engage with the desire to hold onto what inevitably slips away while acknowledging that complete preservation is impossible. The works, for me, embrace vulnerability and change and engage with rituals of mourning and remembrance.”

Material remembers.
Before form, before object, before exhibition — there is matter.
Earth compressed over centuries.
Ore drawn from depth.
Fibre pulled from stem or animal.
Fragments found on pavements and riverbanks.

In 2026 at the Kim Sacks Gallery, we turn toward the lives of materials — toward what is dug up, what blossoms, what is cast aside and gathered again.

The second exhibition of this series, Earth & Ore asks us to kneel to the ground. To consider the act of digging and unearthing — physically and metaphorically. It speaks to extracting minerals and materials from the ground, but also to revealing what lies beneath the surface: hidden histories, buried narratives, and the layered memory of land and labour.

This exhibition traces threads across time
and material. It focuses on works involving minerals extracted from the earth, predominantly clay and metal, used across sculptural and fibre practices, both historical and contemporary.

Within the act of unearthing lies the possibility of recultivation — of planting seeds for future growth, repair and rediscovery.
