Many buildings have a screed layer over the concrete slab to correct levels or provide a suitable surface for floor finishes. However, some existing screeds may be too soft or weak to support a specialised seamless flooring system.

In these cases, replacing the screed may be necessary before the new floor can be installed.

CT Floors uses a self-compacting concrete replacement system designed to be laid in thin layers while achieving the strength required to support the specified floor topping.

This approach has been used on projects ranging from residential properties to commercial developments, including Mercedes showrooms, the Market Theatre, GUD Filters and Bryanston Gallery.

What if the most important part of your new floor is the part you never see?

We consider substrate preparation fundamental to the success of a flooring project. It is also one of the areas where we have invested heavily in technology, machinery and specialised equipment.

Preparation can take longer than the actual application, but rushing this stage can create problems later.

Crack repair is one example.

Large concrete floors are constantly subjected to movement and stress. Cracks can therefore present a significant challenge, and while crack repair can never guarantee that movement will not reappear, addressing existing cracks during preparation is an essential part of the process.

Depending on the condition of the floor, specialised techniques such as crack-injection epoxy can be used to repair and stabilise affected areas.

The finished floor may be what everyone notices, but its performance starts with what happens underneath.

Good flooring installation is not about covering problems. It is about preparing the substrate properly before the floor is installed.

What looks like a hole, crack, damaged section or poorly finished area can become a much bigger issue if the underlying concrete and reinforcement are allowed to deteriorate.

Concrete repair is often about restoring the concrete and protecting the reinforcement from further deterioration. This becomes particularly important where contamination or damage could compromise the reinforcing within the concrete.

Repairs may also be needed after modifications to a facility. For example, concrete may have been cut away to accommodate drainage, services or to investigate the condition of a slab. Once the work is complete, those areas need to be properly reinstated.

The correct repair system can help accelerate curing and may be designed with shrinkage compensation to reduce the risk of shrinkage cracking as the repair cures. For these types of repairs, wet-to-dry epoxy systems can provide an important part of the repair methodology.

We look at concrete repair as part of the bigger flooring system. The objective isn't simply to fill a damaged area. It's to restore the substrate so that it can continue to perform and, where required, provide a suitable foundation for the flooring system that follows.

Epoxy isn't automatically the right answer for every commercial or industrial floor. Its performance depends on the environment, the level of traffic, and what the floor will be exposed to.

One of the characteristics that makes epoxy useful is its density. A correctly specified and installed epoxy floor creates a dense, seamless surface that is relatively easy to clean and maintain.

It also offers good abrasion resistance, making it well suited to environments where the floor needs to withstand regular use without becoming difficult to maintain.

Some environments place very specific demands on a floor. A surface may need to provide slip resistance, withstand chemical exposure, remain easy to clean, and cope with continuous use.

A clear, non-slip epoxy coating can provide an additional protective surface over a suitably prepared existing floor system, while maintaining the appearance of the floor underneath.

This type of application can be particularly useful in environments such as:
