Nickolas Gurtler Office (NGO) is a multi-disciplinary practice of designers, architects and stylists based in Melbourne & Sydney with a commitment to delivering tailored, sophisticated environments. With a commitment to authenticity, luxury and a reverence for history we believe that creativity combined with fine detail creates spaces that are timeless. A boutique group of creative professionals, we believe that design should be immersive, functional, thought-provoking and most importantly - chic.

Whilst we take what we do almost too seriously, we believe in taking our clients on an inclusive design journey together with us - one that is eye-opening, exciting and most importantly - enjoyable.

Led by our principal Nickolas Gurtler, our small team achieves big things. With our multi-disciplinary skillset, we provide interior and architecture services in the residential, multi-residential, commercial, retail and wellness + beauty sectors.

Studio Values

Design, to us, should be transportive, immersive and thought-provoking. Whilst each project is different our studio aesthetic sits at the point of tension between stringent minimalism and absolute glamour, delicately balancing the opposing ideologies together. We call this “restrained glamour”. Our studio has a commitment to authenticity, a reverence for history and a longing to create. We see the design elements and principles as the language of our craft and we utilise, manipulate and transmute them to deliver spaces that are emotive and highly functional to those who experience them.

With a specialisation in the beauty + wellness sector, our firm has a strong commitment to the ritual of beauty and the significance of wellness. Led by our principal Nickolas Gurtler, our small team achieves big things. With our multi-disciplinary skillset, we provide interior and architecture services in the residential, multi-residential, commercial, retail and wellness + beauty sectors. We work on projects across Australia and also take on international projects on a case by case basis.

Architecture + Interior Design

A multi-disciplinary full-service offering, our team work with clients from initial concepts all the way through to a completed project. Our architect and designers develop the entire project holistically for a harmonious finished product. Interior Design

Whether a new build, renovation or commercial endeavour, our interior designers develop the interior spaces from the finishes and fixtures to the joinery and everything in-between. We also enjoy working collaboratively with other architects, branding consultants and landscape designers on projects. Interior Decoration

Working on an existing or newly finished structure, our designers select furniture, lighting, textiles and art into a coalesced and elevated interior experience.

Commercial Design

Working with brands to create an elevated client experience, our designers develop innovative interior environments across the commercial spectrum including retail, hotel, retail and wellness + beauty projects. We also collaborate with experts in branding to deliver fully realised commercial projects. Multi-Residential Interior Design

It’s our birthday! 🥂 11 years of Nickolas Gurtler Office!

11 years ago today, I started what would become Nickolas Gurtler Office, and what an extraordinary journey it’s been!

Over the past 11 years, NGO has had the privilege of designing spaces across Australia and even in the USA. From beautiful private residences to luxury retail, multi-residential developments, workplaces and, more recently, some incredibly meaningful work in healthcare. The diversity of projects, people and places we’ve encountered along the way has been one of the greatest joys of running this practice.

I’m immensely proud of the beauty we’ve created along the way. Spaces that are bold, thoughtful and deeply considered, where unexpected material combinations, rich narratives and an attention to the smallest details come together to create something truly individual. While our work has taken many different forms, that ambition to create spaces that make people feel something has remained constant.

But perhaps the most rewarding part of these 11 years has been the people. To every client who has trusted us with their home, business or vision, and to the builders, makers, artists, suppliers photographers and collaborators who have helped bring our ideas to life, thank you. To the architects and developers who have shared your projects with us, thank you. To the team I’ve had along the way - there are no words powerful enough. I’m enormously grateful for the trust, friendships and opportunities that have shaped this little practice into what it is today.

And to everyone who has followed, supported or championed our work along the way, thank you for being part of the journey.

A modern atelier for Brent Wilson, located within Sydney’s historic Strand Arcade.

Drawing inspiration from the traditions of bespoke tailoring, the interior translates the language of menswear into an architectural expression, where the precision, structure and detailing of a finely tailored suit inform the design.

Subtle references to tailoring are woven throughout. The sculptural bench seat draws on the folded geometry of a suit lapel, while decorative wall lights punctuate the mirrored columns like cufflinks on a tailored sleeve. A restrained palette of Black Caviar marble, walnut, charcoal velvet and reflective surfaces reinforces the sense of understated luxury.

The result is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional menswear atelier, where craftsmanship, materiality and the art of dressing converge.

With a brief to make the home “sexy” by our fabulous client, our Maison Noire project is seductive, masculine and thoughtfully composed.

The seamless connection between the living / dining / kitchen was achieved through monolithic and stacked forms, unified by the most incredible leathered titanium granite, black chrome and black stained timber.

Working with the incredible team at Robeson Architects , this 1900s era workers cottage was expanded and renovated, tailored for its new owner, reinforcing that successful homes result from strong collaborations between client, designer and architect.

A new perspective on the traditional real estate office at Ray White Touma Taylor in Redfern, Sydney.

We were tasked with creating an office for an exceptional team of agents, who’s incredible approaxch deserved a space to match.

Real estate is inherently aspirational. It represents possibility, a new chapter, a new home, a change in lifestyle. With this in mind, we looked beyond the conventional workplace, drawing inspiration from the hospitality spaces that evoke a sense of comfort, luxury and anticipation from the moment you arrive.

The result is an office that feels more akin to the lobby of a refined boutique hotel, where the experience of the space becomes an extension of the aspirations of its clientele.

At its centre, a monolithic reception desk brings together richly veined Black Caviar marble and brushed stainless steel, supported by sculptural walnut sleepers. Wall lights by Sydney-based designer Henry Wilson complete the composition, bringing a quiet warmth to the otherwise bold material palette.

Nominated for awards including best workplace in the IDEA Awards 2025 and the AIDA Awards 2026.

We’re honoured to be named finalists across two categories in the 2026 Belle Fanuli Interior Design Awards, with Dr Fatima Khan recognised in the Commercial Design category.

A project particularly close to our hearts, Dr Fatima Khan reflects our ongoing work contributing to the evolution of women’s healthcare through thoughtful, considered design. We’re especially proud to see a space that challenges the conventions of clinical environments recognised.

More WIP from our Albert Park residence. Part of the new contemporary extension at the rear of the heritage structure, the brief called for a focus on craftsmanship, yet a familiar connection to the older part of the house.

A study in warmth, texture and materiality at Dr Fatima Khan - Menopause Specialist.

Rich burgundy upholstery, walnut joinery and sculptural details create a space that feels worlds away from the conventional clinical environment.

We’re proud to contribute to a new chapter in women’s health through thoughtful, considered design, working alongside visionary practitioners who are reimagining what healthcare spaces can be for better treatment outcomes - and happier practitioners!

Our next women’s health project will be revealed very soon, with another set for completion before the year is out. An exciting time for our studio and a sector we feel privileged to work within.

Work in progress on our Albert Park residence. The brief from our client was to preserve the heritage spirit of the original home, despite the almost complete rebuild.

In the primary suite, the walkthrough robe leads to a luxurious bathroom that juxtaposes Cafe de Paris marble with Roman travertine and bronze. The monolithic shapes that form a visual language for the house are tempered by shaker profile cabinets and bronze hardware.
